Hey Guy's: I want to get back into this flying stuff...have FSX and SP1 and SP2 don't have Exceleration pack yet..my rig is

3.2 gig intel dual core
4 gig o ram PC2 5400
2 x BFG 9800GT in SLI
currently running XP 32 bit will be switching to windows 7..

I can run any game out there including Crysis fully cranked without any problems what so ever..but when I try FSX it runs like total crud..poor frame rates..the graphics suck (I start getting funny anomolies after 10 minutes)etc..I am using the latest Nvidia drivers. I have tried every FSX tweak out there with none of them really doing anything.... I need H E L L L L P P P P....... Sad

Btw FS9 runs smooth as silk but I want the eye candy that FSX apparently has...anyone got any ideas before I bin this DVD...

fsX is a complete different dog as fs9 is/was.

I could type here a lengthy book, but that would not bring you much as every system seems to have it's own idiosyncrosis.

for starters:

DO NOT use toolies like nHancer or other out of the box Graphiccard "tweaking toolies"

make sure your memory and CPU run at the same clockfrequency
xp doesn't swallow more than 3,25 G's of memory
SLI doesn't do diddly squid for fsX, in fact it is counterproductive
fsX is very sensible to defragmentation
also the number of installed Aircraft can have a negative effect on loading times
and so on
DELETE your fsX.cfg and let it rebuild a new one and add the tweaks below.
these are a few tweaks that have meaning and help to get things to run better=smoother:

[Main]
DisablePreload=1

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=800
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=800
IMAGE_PIXELS_FOR_AUTOGEN_POLYGONS=512

one of the biggest framehogs is water, keep that at 2x.low or medium !

apron traffic is a killer set it to minimum
AI traffic 20%
boats20%
roadtraffic 10%

limit your fps to 24-30

I'll gladly talk you through it via TS when you have some time for it Wink

try detuning ai car and boat traffic.... I have Commercial and civilian a/c at 50% and everything else under 30%

Hey guy's: Thanks for the tips, they actually worked quite well....I am going to re-install FSX as I have tried every tweak on the net and I think my cfg file is probably hosed.. and do just the tweaks you guy's mentioned..do any of you know where I can purchase the Acceleration pack online and down load it?..can't find it in any of the stores.

Also what time on Sundays is the flights and what addons do I need to join in and show you what 3 years of being away from the stick can do.. Shocked ...I highly suggest that all of you park waaay in the back when I am taking off..lol

Well...installed a clean Windows 7 Enterprise edition and then FSX and SP1 and SP2...enabled DX10 Preview and away she went running like a top...just going to do a few tweaks and I am ready to go... thanks guy's for all your input.

for informational purposes,

KILL the so-called DX10 shite, it's a bloody annoyance and it doesn't bring diddly squid, as stated in the sim, it's a "preview", result will be all kind of odd goofball effects and AI without textures, just to name a few.

get the latest DX9 set and install it !

make sure you DEFRAG the whole lot, fsX is rather picky on fragmentation

Fled..I beg to differ bud, I find that running FSX in DX10 preview and SLI with Windows 7 is amazing..the FSX settings are all maxed to ultra high and the graphics are amazing as well as the performance. I have the fps set to 25 and it never moves off of 25 fps...below are a few screenshots (resized from 1680 x 1050) taken from a flight out of Honululu international airport. I have done alot of flying the past week and cannot find anything to complain about with DX10 preview and SLI.

Hitty, did you do a 64-bit install of Win 7?
If not, you're still not using all your RAM:-

32-bit systems can only see a total of 4Gb RAM, but that includes the RAM on your graphics cards.
If you're running two 512mb cards in SLi, making 1Gb total, a 32-bit system will only have 3Gb of your system RAM to call on.
If you're running 2 x 1Gb cards, only 2Gb of system RAM.

A 64-bit system will allow the use of much more (not sure of the ceiling) so will easily give you all that 4Gb system RAM loveliness.

If your system will allow it, might be best to go for 64-bit Win 7.

Hey Shades...funny you say that bud...I currently have windows 7 32 bit RTM installed but I went out and bought the 64 bit version (because I am soooo pleased with Windows 7 now) and will be installing it this weekend. I will then be able to use all 6 gig O ram. BTW 32 bit will only recognize 3 gig O ram and it also sees and uses the 1024 MB on each vid card and SLI...that might be a Windows 7 thing though. I have to find a store to buy the FSX ecceleration pack at so I can try that out too. Anyway..fingers crossed that the 64 bit install goes flawless like the 32 bit.

Hit, not to burst your bubble but SLI doesn't do zilch for fsX, it will only use one card, make a lil test and take one out, you'd be surprised that the performance with fsX improves

Went smoother on my Dad's i5 than my i7 (annoyingly, lol).
Took 7 minutes from cd in to running.
On mine it took nearly half as long again.
I haven't connected him to the Interwebbything yet though.
Doing that Tuesday.
