I'd seen that, pretty cool. It's a formalized approach to what used to be improvised. Somewhere over on the VHPAmuseum website is a nice shot of an OH-6A "Loach" that had ripped a skid off in the trees. Round little tadpole that it is, landing back on it's helipad would have meant a rollover with rotor strike. A sandbag "pillow" in more-or-less the contours of the fuselage was hastily constructed and the pilot put it neatly down on that saving the bird and possibly the crew.

Probably the only time nobody bitched about humping sandbags.
