Yeh, Intel r in the lead again at the moment with their dual cores.
Asus might be better than Gigabutt too just now (not sure of that as I'm not up on the Gigabutt boards much anymore, since buying one for myself :().

Hey guys, sorry I ain't been keepin' up with this thread.

No Bush, case still not "modded", I did swap out the PSU tho...

I've been lookin' at some barebone kits, and I think I found one that suits my needs at the moment. Take a look, all is feedback welcome.

here's the link:
global.shuttle.com/Pro.../SB81P.asp

Prolly gonna use the P4, 2GB DDR400, nVidia 7600GT GDDR3.

AMD have a lot of chips which would beat the P4 (I have a P4 3.0 in my current rig).
But one of the Intel dual cores (E6600) would be a worthwhile investment.
Skinny is that it may take amd a while to catch up.
Not worth going quad core at the moment as they actually reduce game performance..., unless you're planning to have lots of app's open at the same time.

Why would you wanna build a similar system to one you're thinking of selling?

I got a thing for the SFF, my Asus only had a 250watt PSU, the XPC from Shuttle has a 350watt PSU. If I can use my P4, cuase I can't sell it, that would save me some cash, plus the evga 256MB 7600GT is DDR3, my Asus 7600GS is 512MB, but only GDDR2..both are PCI Express...

My Asus could not power my current setup, and it had a specially designed PSU...

Shuttle XPC will have enough power for...

P4 3.2GHz
DVD RW
evga 7600GT (EVGA Recomends 350w PSU)
2GB DDR 400
250GB SATA II
80GB IDE (My apps, games, and drivers are stored here)
Card Reader
Floppy Drive

I don't wanna spend a fortune, but after this build I don't wanna upgrade for awhile...

EVGA are a bit daft to recommend that psu without knowing what else you're putting in the system. Unless they're sayin that card alone needs 350w (which sounds a bit excessive).

A 350w psu doesn't sound anywhere near enough for a modern system to me. I have an Antec TruBlue 480w in my build and it's been in for 3 years. I'm only running an ATi 9800-XT. Funnily enough, it replaced a Q-Tec 350w (which was rubbish) after only one month. The Antec is a bit more than this system needs which gives me power in hand should it need it.
The minimum power this thing will run on (remember it's three years old) is 350w.

Have a look at THIS SITE. It's a power calculator. Enter all the components in your rig (case fans and all) and it will give you the size of the psu you should be using.
I use their result and then add (at least) 50w to it as safety margin.

Get a good brand of psu which can provide a regular voltage as well. If it's cheap (like my old Q-Tec was), it's a false economy and may cause you any number of problems.

Yep, good power supplies are a must. Make sure you spring for a good one as a cheap one will cost you BIG in the long run in the way of ruining other components as they fail and I've seen that scenario many times in the past. The one I use today (Built this machine 3 years ago) is a Thermaltake 480W with an adjustable control fan.

Phil's case was a small footprint ASUS case and it came with a small 250w ps. Odd since ASUS usually means good quality and to couple a 250w ps with a case designed for todays mainboards doesn't make sense. Another sad thing is since it's a small footprint case and the ps is proprietary. Shocked

I'm glad he's got a new BIG case now and it shouldn't be long before he's on the 'gaming road' again...:)
