Dragon Armour is coming out with a Humvee Guntruck...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I dont know about anyone else on here, but I am kinda addicted to Dragon Armour... Especially since I just dont have the time betweem work & school etc to actually build a model. I havent gotten into the Humvees, but thought this might interest folks:

"1/72 HMMWV M998 "Gun Truck" w/Added armor and M60, 1st Infantry Division Engineer Brigade, Iraq 2003"

Side discussion, I didnt think the regular/active army still had M60s???

Hope they follow that up with a 1/35 scale kit.

The 2004-2005 Army Green book was still listing the M60 in use by some units but it is being replaced. I think I remember seeing a few M60s in photos from the beginning of OIF and OEF. But I don't recall seeing any show up in the last two years or so. Chris C. had told me that the side gun shields for the M113 ACAV kit had been reclassified as obsolete. My guess is that happiened because the base, which clips onto the machine gun, is for the M-60. You can not mount a M-240 on those side shields without modifying them. That is why I think the few M113s that have shown up with a full set of ACAV shields didn't have any machine guns mounted in them.

1/72? To small for my fat and shaky fingers now days.

There's been a review of the kit (kits actually) for two months. The original reviewer forwarded the kit to me to do a build review (haven't got to that yet).

While the M60 machine gun has been phased out in the Regular Army, remember, a good many of the units in country are from the Guard or Reserve. Many of these units still have the older equipment. They take the older equipment because they are fully trained on it and the old stuff is still adequate for the task at hand.

Still doesnt explain why "1st Infantry Division Engineer Brigade" had one back in 2003, unless the M60 hadnt been completely phased out of the engineers...

Most likely the M60s were drawn from the pre-po site at Doha, Kuwait when the war started in 2003. Pre-po stocks are not known for having the most up-to-date equipment on hand since it normally sits unused for long periods of time.

Hi Neil, RobG, everyone.
In 2003 the only Big Red One units there were 1st BDE, 1 ID from Fort Riley. I believe it's supposed to be a Humvee from the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1 ID. There is a good chance they had an M60 still. Fort Riley was bottom of the list for new equipment back then along with the BDE from 4ID at FT. Carson. I remember the BRT didn't get 240's until 2001 when I was there and they were newly formed up. Hell, A Company, 1-34 AR brought the same tanks they used in Desert Storm. I know, I was there when they screened in Kuwait. BTW, we had an M60 in our unit too. I was told they eventually replaced them all by early Mid 2004 because of lack of parts in country. All the Gaurd units that I've seen Mobilized in the last 2 years got M240's too. They got new ones if they didn't have them yet. It's sooo much better of a weapon.

Another explanation (I'm just guessing again) is that normally there are a limited number of machine guns in any unit, let alone enough to equip every HMMWV or squad in units that most likely not to have a lot of them. Perhaps we needed so many that they got some of the old M60s and reissued them in order to equip every truck with a light machine gun.

RobG,
Yes, that definately was happening too. Better to have an MG than none, the M60 still works fine. Just because you got new M240's doesn't mean you need to turn in the old M60's right away, especially when there's a legitimate need for them. Remember, Tanker's had to use AK's for a while when the started doing dismount patrols. Only 2 M4/16's per Tank, What's the TC and Gunner use? 9mm wasn't the answer.
