Preserved Tanks in Britain
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Thanks for that - updated:

UID 1599: Lulworth Entrance Centurion

Have you any idea where it is now?

Thanks for that - I could see what appeared to be a tank in Google maps at the hard standing for the firing ranges, so I guess that was it - do you know roughly when it moved? I wonder if it was already at Bovington when I visited in October 2008, in which case I might have a picture of it.

Do you have any pictures of these I could use? I'm having trouble getting hold of any.

Thanks for that - you're right, I hadn't spotted that the tanks with Chieftain turrets were actually Centurions! Updated:

UID 1606: Lulworth Centurion ARK

UID 1607: Lulworth Centurion ARK

RE the photos of the Chieftains around Bovington Camp

- Neil_Baumgardner
They seem to have originated from here

Good find - I contacted the webmaster (Brian Gill) and he has kindly given permission to use them, so I've added them to PTC:

I found some more photos of the targets at Lulworth online and have received permission to use them, so today I added photos to some of the existing entries and added 6 more Chieftains:

BTW I see you list two StuG III over there, are you sure?

I'm pretty sure there have been two as they look very different (e.g. around the driver's visor) - one has been in the museum a long time, and a new Finnish-style one arrived from Parola in 1990. However, the 'old' one may not be there any more - I didn't see there it in 2008. I will investigate it further when I get to that section of my Bovington write-up (for example, it may be the one now at Duxford as it certainly resembles it).

From a bit of Googling I can confirm that the other Bovington StuG is the one now at Duxford, so I have combined the two entries I had in the database:

Unique ID 125: Duxford StuG (ex Bovington)

Today I've been working on Bovington's Kl Befehlswagen - it's certainly very well travelled (it has probably the most complex map I've done so far):

Unique ID 16: Bovington Kl Pz Befehlswagen

I'm about to go on a holiday in South Wales. If anyone has suggestions for tanks to visit either on the way there from Northampton, or just generally in South Wales, I'd love to hear from you.

Ones I already know about are either on PTC:

PreservedTanks.com: Preserved Tanks in Britain

or sitting in my 'backlog' waiting to be written up:

Google Maps: Preserved Tanks in Britain

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in Britain

While on holiday I visited Castlemartin and the Wales Tank museum so I'll write those up at some point. I also decided to work on some locations in my backlog (i.e. ones I visited and photographed some years back) so over the next few months they will go online on PTC, in parallel with my main current work on Brazil and Netherlands.

The first is the Thetford Memorial:

7th Armoured Divison Memorial, Thetford Forest

Cromwell Tank

This tank has a plaque on it that says it was restored by R.H. Barrell Engineering (i.e. our very own Adrian Barrell) so to fill in its background locations list and map I have done an initial write-up of Adrian's collection to put it in the database:

Barrell Collection, Bedfield

M5 HST, M4A4, Charioteer

(Adrian - this is mainly a placeholder for now. When it's convenient I'd like to write up the M5 and Charioteer in detail like you did for the Sherman if that's ok with you).

Meanwhile I have been working on tanks in Brazil, so I have researched and written up RR Motor Services which brought the tanks back to England:

RR Motor Services

- Massimo_Foti
- Doug_Kibbey

BTW, with regard to tracking all these vehicles in Brazil, be aware that at least as recently as 2005 or so, there was an individual there that privately owned quite a number of former government Stuarts and other vehicles...

I think you are referring to this:
www.militarytrader.com...iscovered/

...
At least another one is in England:
www.flickr.com/photos/...6270470716

Details here of the one that ended up at Bovington (most photos by Massimo):

Unique ID 1798: Bovington M3A1

I have tracked two of the Brazil Stuarts to Marcus Glenn at Little Sutton in the north of England, and have therefore done a write-up of Marcus Glenn:

Location ID 3540: Marcus Glenn, Little Sutton, Lincolnshire, England

2 x Stuart, M4 hybrid, Abbot

The two Stuarts are currently for sale:

Unique ID 1808: M3 Stuart

Unique ID 1809: M3A1 Stuart

If anyone has anything to add, please let me know.

Post subject: Re: Preserved Tanks in Britain

Current sitrep:

The following Stuarts from Mike Stallwood's batch have been tracked (Brazilian registration, unique ID, location):

M3 EB11159, 1796, Länzlinger Collection (see PTi Switzerland thread)
M3 unknown, 1808, Marcus Glenn (see above)
M3A1 EB11547, 1801, Tanks in Town (see Tanks in Town thread)
M3A1 EB11549, 1798, Bovington (see above)
M3A1 unknown, 1809, Marcus Glenn (see above)

In addition I have been playing detective and have been able to identify the following Stuarts from that batch, and for now have allocated them to the RR Motor Services location until I found out where they moved on to:

M3 unknown, 1814

M3 EB11049? (right hand vehicle), 1812

M3 EB11165, 1813

M3 EB11208, 1802

M3A1 EB11530?, 1803

M3A1 unknown, 1800

M3A1 EB11008, 1804

M3A1 EB11020?, 1805

M3A1 EB11033?, 1807

M3A1 EB11048, 1799

M3A1 EB11071 (second from right), 1806

That makes 5 x M3 and 11 x M3A1 which tallies with the published reports. If anyone can shed light on where these Stuarts are now, please let me know. Or just point out if you've seen a Stuart appear recently in a collection that wasn't there 3 years ago.

At Tanks in Town 2009 there where 3 stuarts, all in the same condition. I have to search for the pictures of them.
Staman in the Netherlands also had 3 stuarts of that lot (one has EB 11567) see: www.staman.nl/N_frame....staman.nl/ (under vehicles for sale)

That would be great thanks - particularly if the pictures include the registration numbers.

Yes, I'm hoping to write up Staman next, particularly as it returns me neatly to working on Preserved Tanks in the Netherlands. This is the best account I've found so far of how Staman and Stallwood came to find and import the Stuarts:

MVCG France

The pictures appear to show 4 Stuarts, but it's not clear if one might be the Lanzlinger one.

The registrations for those 3 stuarts at T.i.T 2009 are EB 11159, EB 11547 and EB 11008, however the last one has EB 11006 painted on the rear Confused
I will send the pictures by mail

That Stuart at this years T.i.T, I have a strong feeling its one of that group. I will try to contact the owner ASAP.
