i can only imagine what some fully intact He-111's, FW's, and 109's would be worth.

I've heard this one, going back 2-3 years....gotta' call "Balderdash" on this one until someone produces the real item(s)....

Stasi and occupying forces didn't leave much unturned during the postwar period...and labored mightily to remove all vestiges of the previous regime under their control. Doubt they'd have let this slip by.

Check out Geoff Walden's wonderful site: Thirdreichinruins ....not all of it is up at one time because of bandwidth. His dad was with occupation and documents a lot from them, and today....cold war in ruins is a cool section too!

Acording to the article it was the Soviets who orderd the airfield cleard and haveing no where to put all of the munitions and A/C the germans stuffed all this stuff into underground bunkers.
This info was found in the stasi files after the wall came dwn. The article states that it would take several years to decifer all of the info in these files. and the article was written in 2003. So lets keep our fingers crossed.

I also recall hearing someting about this a few years back - can't pinpoint it, but it sounds about the same as your timeframe, Ascout.

I remember the description that a discovery was made during excavating for some expansion being done to the airport. And one particular detail, actually the really big news, was that one of the airplanes uncovered was one of the very first BF109's, a prototype used to set a world speed record in the late 30's. Word was that although it was in pretty sorry shape, it was still an extremely historic find.

Funny thing is, in searching for details of that story nowadays, I have yet to find it, and if it was the aircraft used to set the later speed record that stood for like, 50 years, it would be a Bf 209, not a 109. A Bf109 was initially used to set one new record but it wasn't as high as they wanted, thus the attempt with the 209 which was really a much smaller airframe wrapped around a DB605....largely for propaganda purposes it was simply described as a "Messerschmitt Fighter".

Anyhoo, all I see in that article above is a lot of speculation and even less meat to it than the original story. Who knows.

Surely, stuff is buried all over the place, they still find Civil War relics out where I live (LOL, the building contractors hate that - upsets their schedule for weeks to do an archeological dig!) but that's just "stuff' and not a cache of ordnance, etc.
