The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Konigstiger Porsche. With its gun turned on the side it was impossible to get a good "portrait" shot Crying or Very sad

Something that may be new for a few of us: the 8,8 cm gun is not original, it's a later type fitted to the tank after it arrived in Britain (info from the Museum)

I rather like seeing tanks with their turrets rotated to the side...it's rare in "display mode" and gives it sort of an "in action" dimension the public doesn't usually get. I can see where it complicates taking a concise picture as it widens the profile somewhat. And anything is better than "travel lock" (for that those that have them). Laughing

As usual, I'm impressed by how clear & well-lit your photos are!

Thanks. As I said before, it's mostly a combination of a camera that can stand high ISO (1600-2000) and a fast lens, f/2.8 or the like.

These days is getting easier, since even consumer level DSLR can handle ISO 1600, like Canon 550 and 600, or Nikon 7000.

Take one of the cameras above, add a Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and you get a pretty good kit, that doesn't require you to sell a kidney Laughing

For those not familiar with photography terminology:

Every time you double the ISO, you double the amount of light that hits the camera's sensor. A typical compact camera handles ISO 200 very well, and can stand ISO 400. Older entry level reflex can be pushed to ISO 800.

When it cames to lenses, at f/2.8 you capture twice the light that you can get at f/4.0. That f/4.0 is still twice than f/5.6. Most entry-level lenses for DSLR work in the f/4.5-5.6 range. Do the math and see how a wider aperture can make the difference when you shot indoor.

Luchs. I was told the interior is in excellent condition and, most likely, it wouldn't be too hard to turn it into a runner:

The Tiger131 website does state that the engine is a 230. There's some discussion on the HMVF about the chances of getting either of Bov's KT's running. The ex-Shrivenham example is definately engineless, being noted as having concrete blocks replacing it (I assume so that the suspension in loaded properly to make it sit level).

It didn't have concrete blocks (or filled in as some sources stated) at arrival at Bovington. All automotive components removed on the Shrivenham Tiger were scrapped and the engine cut open (sectionalized) for educational purposes. I've heard that the donor vehicle was in fact the Jagdtiger.

It looks like the Jagdtiger still has an engine. But that doesn't necessarily means it's not the donor:

Once it was without an engine.

Thanks for contributing Win. That shot dates back to November 2005, right?

What is the device on the side of the hull? Smoke grenade or something?

It's a somewhat oversized radio antenna's support.

You can see it in Saumur's tank too:

I've updated myself and the engine installed in the Tiger I did indeed come from the V2 KT. That engine suffered a catastrophical failure during initial running tests and the block had to be replaced. It's that block that I've heard came from the Jagdtiger.
