Pictures from Fort Riley
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Neil,

I am working on grids to all the vehicles on Riley, problem is I can't seem to get Google Maps to work with me. As far as the other equipment you listed, I believe all the East Bloc stuff went away from what I was told. The M48 is not around either. I was told she was at MPRC but that could very easily been a bad ID for the M60 there. Next time I'll get up to the tower and surrounding areas and hopefully have more time.

Depending on what exactly you want to do, my mapping page may be useful to you (instructions are beneath the map):

It's what I use to get all the lat/longs on PTC. Just typing in "Fort Riley" is enough to get you in the vicinity.

No sign of the 2S1, M577 or ZSU-23-4 at MATES?

Went down to Ft. Riley today to shoot the AMX-30 on 18C. Stopped back by the KSARNG Museum at Forbes Field in Topeka and there sat the ZSU23-4 and the 2S1.

Mystery Solved.....

Next time I'm in Kansas I've got to drop by Forbes.

Gary, Did you find a SN or Data Plate in the same location PO pointed out?

Now for the M48..... Hopefully she's somewhere being taken care of. I know she's been MIA for quite some time. Last time I saw her at the CAV museum was in the early 90's.

Neil,

Here are the grids, Thanks Trevor.

Here are the grids, Thanks Trevor.

You're welcome - let me know if there's anything I can do to it to make it more useful, faster or easier.

Nope, I looked and couldn't find any SN. Found some casting numbers but that's all. Forbes is turning into a nice little museum. The vehicles and guns they have now are a M60 Slick, M1IP, M109A4, M110A2, M42, M113A2, M4 HST, M5 HST, M2 half-track, M561 Gamma Goat, M135 2 1/2 T, M54 5 T, ZSU-23-4, 2S1 122 SP, M151A1, M38 extended Medical Jeep, M102 105MM, and the pacs for a M1 and M60. They also have varoious choppers. They have a Skycrane with pod, UH-1D, AH-1 Cobra, and an OH-6. They also have a RB-57 and F4-D.

I was stationed at Riley with the 701st maintenance in support of the 1/63rd armored. the m48 was on a concrete slab next to what was the museum. this was back in 1974.

I can remember that M48 sitting out by the Cav. Museum for many years. Back in the late 70s I went down there and was climbing on it. If I remember right the gun was a dummy. The canvas dust cover was loose and I don't think there was a mantlet under it. That's if an old man's memory is correct.

That's her,

Last Time I seen her there was '92 or '93. Picture shows M48 small hatch, not a candidate for A3/A5 update. I never really inspected her up close but the dummy gun explains what I thought was odd when I did look at her. Back before Desert Storm Riley had very few AFV's on display. Most likely she was a range rescue. There were some M47/48 hulks along with M53/55's up on these hillsides ( 39.188260,-96.72810 green Arrow) inside the Artillery/Mortar impact areas. As I said before, both those M47's in front of 2nd BDE HQ's were destined for target duty back in the mid 80's when they were pulled from a bunch at Camp Funston. Got a funny feeling she went back on target duty Sad

New guy,
I was with Rileys' 1-63 back in 86-87, nice to have another BRO alumni here (Big Red One) . After being to Irwin and then Germany, 1-63 is back at Riley with 2nd BDE.

It must have vanished pre `94. I spent way more time than I ever cared to at Ft. Riley from`94 to `04 and never saw it. In that time frame I spent a lot of time hunting down vehicles on post.
