New at Ft.Bliss Museum, M2 Halftrack
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Trevor

The Ferris Barracks website has several various shots of Cobra King in the early 70's through 1988.

I think that particular photo of CK is from a post card.

CK relocated to Vilseck in 1993/94, after the closure of Ferris Barracks. I believe the M4A1(76) made the journey at the same time.

The photo with Gen Abrams was taken on an official visit in 1973.

Trevor,
Looking at it now, I do see that it is not a M4A1 and does look to be a Welded hull like CK. What I find intresting about this photo is that from what I understand, CK was at one of the Armor BN's during it's time at Ferris Barracks, not at the BDE HQ. I don't remember it being there, only a M4A1.
I found the pic online, so it's yours. I personally don't have any Ferris Barracks photos

Panamadan, I don't use photo's on the website unless I have permission from the author. Thanks anyway.

Trevor
I too borrowed the color photo, but here is the Abrams pose with the Ferris Barracks M4A1 that I obtained thru the Museum Archives.

There are a number of photos from this 'Abe' visitation of Ferris Barracks in 1973. There was some sort of an awards ceremony in front of the tank, but this is perhaps the best.

When I stumbled on this file, I was hoping that there was a similiar posed shot of Abrams next to Cobra King, which would have been so cool. Unfortunately there was no such shot.

Regards
Don

Thanks, Don, for letting me know - I'll use the Abrams pic but not the other one (for now at least, I might look for permission for the colour one later).

At that time Ferris barracks was part of the 4AD, so I imagine that might be part of the reason that he was there.

Hi Folks!

The M4A1 76mm HVSS Thunderbolt VI is not the same tank in Dontos post. In that photo the side of the turret is clean. The vehiche here at Ft Bliss has large casting numbers centered on the side of the turret. That TB VII vehicle has a muzzle break while the one here at Bliss only has a thread protection coller.

Using Hunicutt's Halftrack book, the vehicle at the start of this tread is a M2 with some modifications.

Spot report!

Agreed - so it raises the question of where it did come from. Any ideas?

Maybe from another 1AD post in Germany that was closed? Such as Bamberg, etc?

I've seen a few various static tanks from many different Kasernes. I've been looking thru my files trying to find another M4A1(76).

This one popped up from Vilseck in 1949, although not an M4A1, this M4A3(76) does sorta spark some interest.

Nice photo Don.
Notice how the light guards are missing along with the lights.
I'm sure this is a war vet.

My guess is no. The last set of bumper markings are for the 4th Armored Division 37 Armored Regt. No 1st AD unit would park a vehicle next to a building and not repaint it with their markings.

My guess is this vehicle when into storage somewhere when the 4th AD stood down. Then as part of the withdraw from Germany, it was shipped to Ft. Bliss.
