FAIL! Deep water fording M1A1 in Korea
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi,

I would LOVE to read the accident report on that one! Somebody forgot to close something...

Driver's hatch? Do they have an escape hatch? Bilge pumps? Turret ring seal?

I bet there was a lot of cussin' at some poor soul.

Hmmmm...thirty-odd years of translating 'plausible excuses' says "we were screaming along and my TC saw this puddle and though it would be really cool to see how big a splash we could make..."

Turns out the puddle was a little deeper than originally expected. I'll bet the sudden stop was quite a ride, too.

I;ll bet this is a '1' tank,.......Plt Leaders tend to get 'GA-GA' when they see a puddle.......

Seeing this reminds me of the age old addage,......TANKS DON'T FLOAT !!!

HA HA HA

I'll bet this tank did get 'floated' though.....(HA HA HA)!!

Too much water in all those components,....she'll need a total rebuild.

The term 'STUMP' comes to mind,.....

*Stupid Tanker Under Maintenance Protection*

Regards
Don

That looks like one of the ROK's swim test areas for their K200's they use prior to swimming the Imjim River around Greek Valley during FTX's.

On a more serious note. Some one had enough sense to traverse and raise the tube so the driver could escape. Could have been real ugly if the driver opened the hatch and the DHI kicked in preventing the turret from moving, requiring the TC to override it. Something a Panicked LT or Junior NCO (most have hardly any Tank time now days) might not think of.

During the big flood of '94 a lot of 2nd IDs' tanks got submerged like this in the motor pool. Had some issues (V-packs, Oils, etc) but nothing that but wasn't capable of being handled in house. I will say that engine is suspect, since water don't compress and ingesting it a full spool could destroy it. All depends.

I would not want to explain this one to the Boss
