The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

BTW, if anyone contemplates removing paint from public display vehicles . . .

0. The best course (which I have done) is to contact the custodians of the vehicle and tell them what you are trying to do. Show them the size of the areas you wish to work and your plan for preservation afterwards.

1. If you did not receive permission, realize that the authorities will likely consider it vandalism or destruction of government property if caught. It is also unlikely that anyone in the MV community will support you either.

2. Be neat.

3. Thick paint can be removed by scoring a cross-hatch pattern over the stamping with a razor then scraping. Do NOT use files as they will remove the metal and destroy the artifact. Water-based paint strippers may also be of use. The ultimate is a scotch-brite wheel in a portable drill. Remove only enough "overburden" to reveal the stampings.

4. Preserve the area for future researchers by overpainting with matching color paint over primer or with clear nail polish (which gives a thick, durable coating). Again, neatness will leave a good impression.

5. Share your findings with the custodians and any history you might be able to provide. Write it down on an index card along with your contact info for them.
