Minot ND M88 Action
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Minot ND M88 Action

There’s an M88 in the Souris (Mouse) River in Minot, North Dakota right now, assisting several earth movers to clear debris from a bridge. I think that the 88 is being used to help stabilize the heavy equipment in the swift river waters.

They are streaming live: Google KXMC-TV.

Or try www.kxnet.com/?setCity=min&

Minot is in big trouble after the river spilled over the dikes; 25% of the population (up to 10,000 people) were ordered evacuated on Wednesday.

Edit (1801 CDT): It looks like they cut the feed on the M88; they are having "weather".

The guy surveying the helicopter footage live was pretty composed as it overflew his own house, which was inundated.

Aren't there "minuteman" silos in Minot? What's up with those I wonder (not that they're active)

Doug

I believe all those silos are deactivated and sold off to the public.

I'll bet they can be seen from the circular swirl of water,.....like a drain. That is until they fill up!?

Don

Guys:

I have heard that a number of ICBM sites in North Dakota were de-militarized; it seems to me that they were in the northeastern part of the state. However, apparently there are still Minuteman silos active and ready to roll in North Dakota.

Here’s a blurb with info from Fox News — www.foxnews.com/us/201...ood-crest/

“The National Guard activated 870 members for the crisis. Minot is best known as home to an Air Force base responsible for 150 Minuteman III missiles in underground launch silos scattered over 8,500 square miles in northwest North Dakota.

Col. S.L. Davis, commander of the 91st Missile Wing, said there was some "localized flooding" at a handful of missiles sites because of the wet spring and summer. But he said the silos are designed to safely handle some water and protective measures were taken at a few sites similar to what's done in preparation for spring runoff from snowmelt.”

Wikipedia says that the 91st Missile Wing is the modern-day incarnation of the 91st Bomb Group (Heavy) of 8th Air Force fame, 1943-1945.

I shut down my machine after about 1830 CDT; I didn’t see them ever return to the M88. They had to shut down their feed of the bridge work due to severe storms (and the threat of tornadoes!). I’ll check in with KXMC again now.

Best of luck to everyone in Minot and the rest of North Dakota!

Mark

Edit (2115 CDT): it looks like they are taking the heavy equipment out of the river for the night at this time. The M88 is moving out. (see link above)

I should point out that by "out of the river" I really mean "out of the water." None of these vehicles are actually IN the river channel itself, just the flooded area around the dikes.
