New USA AFV Register Update Posted!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Another update to add would be the chinging of the War Memorials of Wisconsin website to warmemorials.us The ipower link will work for now, but am unsure how much longer it will work for.

You can also check out all the changes we have been making by going to: warmemorials.us/whats_...index.html

The Nook will handle PDFs but there are sometimes issues (It has big problems with the Army Green Book PDFs for several reasons) I will download it and let you know. There are tools that will convert from PDF to Epub format but I'm told starting from RTF (Rich Text Format) produces a much better output.

excellent freeware one here

Hi Neil,

I've been "out in the field," using V3-1.

Correction for Russellville, KY: There is only one M114 there, S/N 210, no M113.

Hi Neil,

Some updates for Ft. Knox, KY ...

There is an M578 at the intersection of 15th Cavalry Dr. and 26th Cavalry Dr. (at Bldg. 6012). S/N 2089, BMY 1987. In Ver. 3.1 this vehicle is listed in Richardson Motor Pool (apparently), but it's in the Disney Barracks area and has been there for the past few years anyway.

P. 101, Zussmann MOUT Range - these are the listed vehicles that are actually at that location (the rest are elsewhere on Ft. Knox; I provided these photos and S/Ns to Don):

Dragoon 300 Trailblazer
M48A1 hull with M60A2 turret, hull S/N 4599, Reg. No. 9A8029
The M60A1 listed as S/N 9243 is an M60A3, S/N C43 (yes, it's a C), Reg. No. JJ030X. That is, there was no M60A1 there when I took those photos earlier this year.
M106 - I saw two there; maybe there are three.
M114 - one is S/N 2508 (fitted with a dummy turret and gun tube), the other has the S/N scratched out.

M551 Sheridan - This vehice is not at Zussmann - it is located in the Hays Flats artillery impact area (along with several others (maybe 10), plus some M60A1s and M113s (or M106s).

M41 Walker Bulldog - not at Zussmann, but in the downrange impact area of Brumfield Tank Range, off Dowdell Rd.

Of the vehicles listed as Range Targets, the M1 Abrams and M2 Bradleys were used for recovery training in the Carpenter Test Area, and these have all been shipped to Fort Benning. I do not believe any Abrams or Bradleys were ever used as hard targets on the actual ranges.

Geoff

I added the following to the board in an earlier posting, but have reposted them here in case you missed them:

1) The M114 questionably listed at Alton IL was in fact located at Olin Park, East Alton IL. It was in the midst of a bunch of playground equipment when I last saw it in 1991, and was visible from the adjacent highway at that time. I zoomed in to the location on Google Earth, but could not make out the vehicle shape from all of the trees in the immediate area.

2) There are a number of M3 halftrack chassises above the number in the listing for the museum located on Cut Street in Alton IL There may be as many as ten of them in the yard, all of them in a variety of stages of disrepair. They were there as recently as last summer. I have never seen the museum open at any time over a large number of visits.

3) During my last visit to Marine IL in 1990 or so, there was a non-ballistic M5 light tank in the municipal park. As they now show a M60, the M5 may have been replaced. A visit to Google Earth shows one vehicle from the street view, but it is not possible to tell if it is an M60 or the older M5.

4) As recently as 2009, there was a M60 parked outside of the ROTC building at Norwich College, Northfield VT.

5) In addition to the LVT at League City TX, there is another such vehicle on the grounds of Seawolf Park, located on the eastern side of Galveston TX. It is visible from Google Earth, located in the approximate middle of the park in a fenced enclosure.

6) There was an ex-Soviet vehicle (tank of some sort) located at the Marine Corps facility in Galveston TX. It was outdoors when I first saw it, but it has since been moved to God alone knows where. The whole area is fenced and off limits to civilians.

7) There is an embryonic museum collection located a few miles to the south of College Station TX. On the west side of Texas Highway 6, it is to be called Museum of The American GI, or so it is claimed on a sign by the highway. Included in the collection there are a M47 Patton and a M4 Sherman hull, which is stripped and badly picked over. They also have a section of assembled Bailey bridge, plus some other odds and ends.

The M4 is visible from Google Earth, but the M47 is almost completely hidden by foliage.

8 ) There used to be an early M3 light tank outside of a American Legion post in Flora IL, parked next to a Japanese mountain howitzer. According to the barman at the post, someone came by one day and offered a considerable amount of cash to the post president, who accepted it in the name of the post. The buyer had a flatbed with a winch at the post before the end of the day, and the tank was G-O-N-E.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I have (over the past twenty odd years) accumulated a database of military relics as I blundered into them during my travels. Most of my stuff falls into the artillery category, but there are tanks and other stuff there as well, like Spanish American artillery and all sechlike.

Some more at Fort Knox ...

Hackett Range - There are four M551s, four M577s, and one M60A1 (it might be an A3 - too far from the range baseline to see for sure). These are all wrecked hard targets.

At the Patton Museum, the M7B1 out front has FP107 stamped into the rear quarter on each hull side (don't know if this is a S/N or not).

The M114 that is now out front of the Patton Museum is S/N 161.

The M47 at the Patton Museum looks like S/N 0969 to me (it's listed as 6960). This is one of those numbers that looks the same whichever way you look at it, but if you read it like you read the S/N on an M60-series tow hook mount, it would be 0969. This tank also has 5744 stamped in the hull next to the left headlight.

Some more for the Fort Knox Range Targets listing ...

There is an old range that does not have a name on modern range maps, located off Wilson Road between Garvin Range and Hines Range. It looks like it used to be a LAW sub-caliber range, M203 range, or 50-cal range. It doesn't look like it has been used in some time. The hard targets on this range include six M60-series tanks, either M60A1s or M60A3s (one of them appears to have a thermal shroud on the gun tube).

There are also some extra hard targets parked in and near the woods near the firing line on this range. These include three M578s, and M106, an M60A2 turret, and something that looks like an experimental or test turret rig for an M109A6 howitzer.

Terry, I'm having some trouble locating this LVT - can you help? Maybe coordinates from Google Maps? If you click on a spot on the map, and then click on "what is here," it will give you a green pushpin/arrow. If you click on the green arrow it will show you the coordinates.

Thanks!
