South Dakota and Nebraska updates
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: South Dakota and Nebraska updates

On a road trip to IPMS Nationals in Omaha, I took the time to do some tank spotting with the following results for the AFV Register.
Sisseton SD, M60A0, SN 1578 RN 9B49ZZ
Redfield SD, M60A0, located beside the armory on W 3rd St. at W 3rd Ave. It is displayed behind a fence, so numbers cannot be seen.

Dakota City NE, M60A3, SN 2723A RN JJ04SC
Elkhorn NE, M60A3, SN 2738A RN JJ04ST
Gretna NE, M60A3, SN 2672A RN JJ04OV
Lyons NE, M4A3(76)HVSS, located in a park on S Main St at S First St. No numbers visible.
Omaha NE, ref the entry at Legion Post 374, this Post has moved to a strip mall a few blocks south and the tank has disappeared. It is visible on Google Street View, but it is gone. The Post was closed when I visited, so I could not ask about the tank.
ref the entry at Legion Post 1, this Post has no tank and according to the staff, it never did. They did however tell me about the M60A0 at Bellevue listed below. Could this be the one from Post 374?
ref the entry at VFW Post 8334, again, no tank, and again the staff told me they never had one, and they know of none in the area.
Bellevue NE (suburb of Omaha), M60A0, paint too thick to read any numbers. Located at Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home, 12505 S 40th St. just off Capehart Rd. (Co Hwy F102)
Tekamah NE, M4A3(105)HVSS, located in front of the County Courthouse at the corner of 13th St and M St. Lots of numbers stamped into the front and rear plates of this baby. Maybe none are the SN, but here is what I could read. Wiser heads than me may know what they mean.
glacis plate, left side, 5478
glacis plate, right side, 1062965 over CP8340
rear plate, left side, 15358
rear plate, right side, 612X45, the X being an unreadable digit.
I have put photos of all these and more on my photobucket page at http:s698.photobucket.com/home/Alf-Adams, or just search for my name with the dash between, and it should find it.
Enjoy.

I didn't realize that the Legion Post had moved. They used to have an M60 and a UH-1, both in pretty good shape.

The M60 at the Bellevue location of the NE Veterans Home might be the same one that they had out front when the home was in the old "county home" out north between Boy's Town and Elkhorn on Maple St (Hwy 64).

Nice updates on the other stuff, thanks.

Are you from SD? I can guide you to a couple more items in the northern NE area.

There is a picture of the tow lug serial number of the Gretna tank on my Photobucket page. I have to admit, the second digit could be a 6 or an 8. I lean slightly towards seeing a 6, but thick paint obscures it partly. Perhaps on a future visit, a few seconds work with a pocket knife would resolve it. I try not to do that as it leaves bare metal exposed and allows rust to start, but sometimes it is the only way to be sure.

I am from Winnipeg, up in Canada. Omaha is about a 12 hour drive straight south for me, including stops for gas and food. I don't know when I will be back in the Omaha area, but anytime I travel in the USA, I take along a laptop with the AFV Register on it and try to fit in some tank spotting. If you know of any that are not on the Register, I would be very interested in hearing about them, and putting them on my to see list.

If you are down this way again, you can detour over to US Highway 81. Not terribly far off that route are a US 8" howitzer in Pierce, NE, an M60A3 at Winside, as well as at Neliegh, an M551 at Battle Creek (rather mediocre shape though), a US 57mm AT gun in Stanton, a 75mm pack howitzer at Madison, and an M60A3 at Columbus (or if you follow Hwy 275 to Omaha, there is another M60A3 at West Point).

If you saw the M4A3E8 at Lyons you may also have passed the 155mm howitzer at Oakland.

Due to job changes I don't get out and explore as much as I was doing, but there are a number of interesting items around Nebraska.
