Centaur question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

the compass is for the accompanying infantry to give target directions to the crew of the tank

So the infantry could ask to shoot at a target at 25°, the zero degree actual would be at the front of the tank hull

The only vehicle's I know that have these markings are the Centaur tanks of the British Royal Marines Armoured Support

AFAIK, the "compass" on the turret were used when the tanks were firing from landing craft during the landing in Normandy. That is why it is a feature unique to the Royal Marines Centaurs.
