Improvized Armoured Vehicles
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Every bit as daunting as Dr. No's dragon tank.

Different Improvised Armoured Fighting Vehicles – Damas Museum, Damascus (Syria)

The information isn’t confirmed but all could be a ex – Israeli vehicles captured by Syrians ?

I think the information: "two Free-French armoured trucks captured from French Forces during the short war of independence, in 1946" isn't corect ?
Have the French Forces any improvised armoured vehicles in Syria ?

Bialy-R,
Thanks for posting the photoes from the museum in Damascus. One of the vehicles is definitely French. The first truck, the one with the conventional front end is a "Bisch" type Dodge. They were built before WW-2 for service in the French mandated areas of the mid-east. The cab and engine compartment had armour added inside the existing body panels. The cargo area had a complete new build armour body. Versions with a simple personel body (like the one in the photo) and with gun mounts for a 37mm or 47mm cannon were built. They served with Foreign Legion units before the war, and both Vichy and Free French units during WW-2. After the war trucks remaining in country passed on to the Syrian government. Some were used during the '48 war.

The second truck, the one with the van body, is a typical Israeli "Sandwich" truck. Body panels were made from a laminate of wood with relatively thin sheet metal on both sides. They were used as convoy escorts before and during the '48 war. Some were simple open topped cars, others (like the example shown) had a closed top with a cupola. The side panels of the cupola were hinged on the centerline. They were known as "Butterfly" cars. This one appears to have been built on a British 15CWT chassis.

The third truck, the one with the turret, is a bit harder to define. They body has features typical of Jewish Palestinian cars built during the mandate period. The turret design is not typical.

I can't find the website that covers the FFL vehicles just now. I did save this pic of one of the vehicles in use:

That's the locally made shell of an upgraded White M-3 Scout Car. Something around 30 M-3s were altered to armoured cars during the '48 war by covering the rear with armour and adding a small turret. Most were armed with MG-34's, although a few had Besas, and there was at least one with a French 37mm SA.38 cannon.

The car at Latrun is a recently built reproduction of one of the originals. Beautifully made and quite accurate. It's a slightly different version than the shell on Telegraph Hill. The Latrun car has higher vertical sides, and different angled panels.
There were at least five different major variations of the body design, and many minor detail differences.

Curiously enough, we haven't yet included the LTTE's BMT Armored Tank yet (YW531 hull + Saladin turret):

The latest photos confirm the lack of any sort of vision devices for the driver... He would have to steer on instructions from the commander when closed down for combat.
