Don't miss the landings. I'm surprised they tow that parachute all over the airport instead of releasing it and having a chase car pick it up. Too tight a turn and you could rip runway/taxiway lights right out of the ground.

Now that was cool. I'm guessing the brakes on that thing must suck to all get-out. And Van Nuys airport is certainly very interesting! That bird really shows it's age by the amount of smoke it's making, very cool to see the black smoke start belching out during the first landing approach and then hear the engines spool up a little a second or two later. And that things gets off the ground slower than I get out of bed on a weekend!

J-79's, the same smoke machine in the F-4, A-5, B-58, etc., etc.

I was surprised at how well the FS9 version models the up-and-down plunging on the forward gear during landing. Cumbersome....It wasn't called "the whale" for nothing. Wink

Nope - The A3D used the J-57 The only plane I remember using J-79s in underwing pods was the Convair 880. The A3J (A-5) Vigilante used J-79s

about dropping the drogue chute at EOR. That would only be done at bases where there was enough traffic to station a recovery crew there to retrieve them. Between the ones lost because they blow away, the ones stolen by other people and the chance it could blow onto an active runway or taxiway it is cheaper and safer to keep it until you park. There were still a few active aircraft using them when I was in the AF in the late 70s and only when you had a lot of activity (like at Nellis during Red Flag) would they drop them at EOR. Transiants coming into Langley always taxied with them

Bob, you're right, I was thinking (and off by Cool of the uprated engines on the B-66 (J-71's).

Keep in mind that Van Nuys is a commercial, not military, airport. I'd expect different standards might prevail regarding features like parachutes. Clearly there's not going to be whole crews available for 'chute recovery, even for Raytheon/Navy test planes. There just tend to be more hazards in dragging stuff like that around a usy GA/commercial facility, which usually has space limitations compared to a military base, especially one located within the city limits of Los Angeles (in the valley, dood). Smile
