Canada scrapping some of it's M113 fleet
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I think that it's a shame that the government is willing to destroy SOME the M113 fleet and variants instead of offering them to military vehicle collectors first. Owning a military vehicle is not illegal in Canada but collectors never get a chance to buy a Canadain military armoured vehicle because of the policy that calls for them to be cut up and sold as scrap. At least give us a chance to buy the vehicles before destroying them.

I see that Great Britain is selling off a bunch of vehicles. Here's a partial list: COLLECTORS VEHICLES inc. FV 432 APC, FV 434, Centurion ARV, Chinese APC reference vehicle, Springer Buggy Etc.
Large Quantity of CVRT, Ferret, Saracen, Saladin, Centurion, Chieftain Etc. ARMOURED VEHICLE SPARES inc. Engines, Transmissions Etc.

Too bad Canadians can't buy Canadian vehicles.

yes well a few years ago Crown Assests was selling some of the M113 fleet then. Someone I know tried to buy one but they made it so prohibitive in prices then(almost equil to what was paid for these vehicles when they were new)and they were in lots of 10 vehicles, that he gave up on it. And remember Canada follows the U.S's requirement to de-militarize any equipment manufactured out of the U.S.. Crying or Very sad They did the same thing with the M151 mutts, a scrap yard tried sneaking a bunch mutts into the collector market by cutting them up but with markings to put the 4 qtrs back together and ended up being busted for it. I do know there a few M113s around that will escape the torch I seen them, some are in poor shape but they're still out there. Wink

Well It's not all bad news if you can create a non-profit charitable organization in the next couple of weeks:
.
M109 Guns for Monuments - Deadline for Request, 29 February 2012
Looking for that unique lawn ornament? Search no further!

ADM (Mat) has approximately 15 X M109 howitzers available for donation. Donations can be to Bases, Regiments, Legions, Museums, Municipalities, but not to individuals. Recipient must be a non-profit, charitable organization. ADM (Mat) has a standard donation agreement that is used to formalize the process and recipient must agree to the terms and conditions in the Donation agreement.

DND will demilitarize the item and transport it to the closest base. The recipient must prepare a concrete pad, transport the item from the base, and assume responsibility for care, maintenance, safety, etc, as per the ADM (Mat) agreement document.

Requests for a M109 to be used as a monument must be received by 29 February 2012, and will be allocated on a first-request basis, provided the potential recipient meets the criteria. ADM (Mat) staff will screen and interview all requests and then notify those accepted, probably by end March.

Organizations should be prepared to provide information such as:
· Organization name and purposes/constitution
· Financial capacity to live up to commitments
· Specific person responsible: Name, Address, Phone Number, Email
· Statement of long-term commitment and sincerity
· Wherewithal and commitment to guarantee pick-up and delivery
· Commitment to a concrete pad and appropriate signage and landscaping
· Nature and type of painting that would be acceptable
· Commitment to long-term upkeep
· Safety measures and Insurance

Send requests to:
DSAL Donation's Officer
WO Barbara Elliott
BARBARA.ELLIOTT @ forces.gc.ca

Phone: 613-996-2630
Fax: 613-996-2529

Cheers! Bruce

Long after disposing of its M113 fleet, the Dutch Army is currently phasing out it's family of M113-based vehicles (at least 571 YPR-765, YPR-608, M-577 AFVs) in favour of the CV-90 and Boxer.

Out of 246 currently struck off charge, only 6 have been sold. I fear a number will be scrapped, if they cannot be sold to a legitimate government.

Sorry no private buyers; you will have to wait until the next careful owner phases them out a few decades from now.

Hi Folks!

It is sad to hear that many will be destoryed and not sold to private buyers.
Hopefully a large number of all the different 113 based vehicles will end up at a lot of musuems.

Many years ago when FMC designed that vehicle, they did an outstanding job. But that design has had it's day and it is time for newer warhorses to replace her.
This old Armored Cavarlyman hopes that Fiddler's Green has a large motor pool and can find room for those old war horses.

Sgt, Scouts out.

Indeed they did. It was one of only a few types of AFV actually used in combat by the Dutch Armed Forces, and has proven to be a very reliable workhorse for 30 years.

Strangely, AFAIK only the Netherlands and Korea bought this variant of the M113. But many other countries are now benefitting from the development of this variant. The Netherlands originally bought 2,082 in different versions, incl. Armoured personnel carrier (APC), Anti-Tank, Reconnaissance, Engineer, Cargo, and Ambulance. 25 were sold to Bahrain, 1,030 to Egypt, 441 to Jordan and 18 to Chile. Of the 568 vehicles, 24 APCs were converted to YPR-765 KMAR for use by the 4 armoured platoons of the Royal Military Police.

Currently, 202 have been decommissioned to be sold, 9 were lost in combat and the remaining 333 vehicles are still in use. These will be gradually replaced by CV9035NL, Fennek and Boxer vehicles by 2015.
