US Army has Assault Breacher Vehicles!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: US Army has Assault Breacher Vehicles!

Hi Folks!

While sliding down my Face Book page, came acrossed a very surpising video. The 3rd Bde at Ft. Benning, GA, has received six M1 Assault Breacher Vehicles (ABV)!
I know the USMC has had the ABV for a few years, but I had never seen or read anything on the Army picking up this vehicle. I am very surpised to hear another
heavy metal vehicle is being added to the Army inventory.

I wonder if these vehicles are new convertions or did the Army barrowed them from the Marines?

Tried to copy and post the link, but somehow I didn't do it right. Sorry.

Spot Report!

Roy

In 2008 there were 2 ABV's here at Ft Knox with the USMC detatchment. They moved to Ft Benning with the Armor School so those may be USMC vehicles.

The ABV is based on rebuilt M1A1 hulls. The turret is a basic M1A1 turret which is greatly modified with the Line charge launcher. There is a new style mine plow that mounts to the front of the ABV hull.

I took a large volume of photos of the ABV, guess I need to dig those up.....

Thanks for the heads up.
Regards
Don

According to Wikipedia

"According to a report in December 2009, there were then five ABVs in Afghanistan, and the U.S. Marines were said to have plans to field a total of 52 by 2012, of which about 34 have already had been produced. The U.S. Army was said to have ordered 187.[18]"

The video I saw was a news type report. A couple of Soldiers were interviewed about the new vehicles and they said one ABV would replace a Bradley with a MILIC and a M8 ACE during mine field breaching operations.
Part of the report showed Engineers dismounting from a Bradley and putting out orange traffic cones to mark the sides of a lane. Then it show how the ABV could mark a lane without anyone dismounting.

The report stated the vehicles had been issued to the 3rd BCT. As far as I know the Marines don't use the term BCT.
