Bruno Friesen, of Panzer Gunner & the CWM, has Passed Away
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Thanks to poster Bruce Clark, Bruno showed me around the Canadian War Museum's old Vimy House storage building about 10 years ago. Back then Bruce suggested I should ask him to tell me his story, and quite a story it was.

Bruno came out with this book a few years later.

Thanks for remembering Bruno, Neil.

It has been a few years since I last saw him but he was a great story teller who surprised many visitors at CWM with his strange tale of a Canadian boy driving panzers in East Prussia. His vivid description of the skills needed to shift gears to preserve the transmission of Pz IV's and Jdgpz Iv's was profane but still firmly planted in my brain!

He was very important in the museums effort to get the Panther from CFB Borden to CWM in 2005, writing a research paper detailing Canada's battles against Panthers in NW Europe and Italy to support the collections managers push.

He is sorely missed by all who knew him.

I got this book last month or so. Correct about the hands-on descriptions of shifting, life in the crew and how to be a MkIV gunner. His language is not always easy to follow. I think his book should have had another pass by the editor to iron out his imperfections with English. I can suffer the odd slip-up, but his 'oh by the way' style detracted from the storylines.

(For a guy who had an MA in literature and taught English at college, it isn't saying much about academic qualifications to be at the front of the classroom.)

Couldn't agree more! I saw early drafts of a few chapters and I commented on the language, including making suggestions to make it more "readable". When i checked what I'd seen originally with what was published- there were no changes!

Bruno was very proud and hauled his manuscript around to various publishers for years. It was his experience and I don't think he wanted to change a word he wrote.
