How many M42-series 40mm?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Anyone know how many of these were made? The highest number listed in the 1958 TM (after production ended) was 1877. I have seen some insane numbers like 6000 or even 8000, but that doesn't make any sense given that only 3700-odd M41 light tanks were made and I would imagine the M42 would be even less common in the Army structure - unless the US was planning entire SPAAG Corps or something.

Kurt,
I did some numbers research to find that total M42 production was 3700 vehicles. There were two variants M42 and M42A1. These numbers are also to include US exported vehicles.
The M41 Light Tank (M41- M41A3) total production was only 5500, and not inclusive of the M42 variant.
Check sources such as Janes Armor and Artillery and others online and most agree on the 3700 total produced. Hope this helps. Rick

I had a look in Hunnicutt, usually my first port of call. but he doesn't seem to give its production numbers. For those interested, there's a good list of surviving examples in the NDQSA November 2008 newsletter:

Rick, that 5500 number for M41s seems high. Hunnicutt says 3729, perhaps someone was counting those modified to A2s and A3s as additional production?

Trevor, I could not find anything there either.

Kurt,
I dug into my garage and found my old Light Tank files. I didn't find my SPAAG box, but it's in there somewhere! I found the same number, 5500 for all models of M41 Light tank. This does not mean it's correct though! The one interesting document I found was the "Historical Property Catolog Work Sheet" from Aberdeen done by George B. Jarrett in 1964. It states that the Access Road Display M41 (T41E1) Light Tank was Serial number 104, Registration number 30163836, numbers located inside tank on a plate. The tank is detailed as MCV- 463, acquisition 1951. I'll let you know if I find anything else. Let me know if other sources back Hunnicutt's 3729. Thanks, Rick
