T-54/55 Front Hull Question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: T-54/55 Front Hull Question
Why does the front of the T-54/55 front hull sides tapper down at the bow in the area of the front idlers? Why shorten the width of the hull at this point and add additional welding work? Was it to reduce weight? Better access to the front idler for maintenance?

I did not think about this until looking a hull T-44 sketch from Soviet manual, and noted the difference with the T-55 hull.
