The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Anyone else notice that this is the same vehicle but in some of the pics it has road wheels and in some pics they're missing, This doesn't appear to be the vehicle that's at Kubinka, but I guess it could be. Maybe a end of the War repair job?

This pic it's missing the 6th road wheel

This pic appears to be missing maybe the 3rd and 6th road wheel and the track is off

I confess to never having noticed the toothed sprockets front and rear before. Presumably these were not all driven and one set is an idler with teeth for "insurance"?

From wiki:
What appears to be two sets of drive sprockets, at either end of the vehicle per side, actually comprises a front sprocket that engaged the track with a drum brake unit built into its hub to act as the track brake, with the electric drive motor at the rear on each side, powering the track's rear drive sprocket.

By the way, the lack of a hull MG and certain other features make this a Ferdinand.

The Russians captured numerous Elephants/Ferdinands.
grayknight.narod.ru/Fe...rsk_43.htm
The one pictured above, is Fgst.No.150090, late of the 1/s.Pz.Jg.Abt.653, number 122.
Kubinka's example is Fgst.No.15072, late 1/s.Pz.Jg.Abt.654 number 501.
Both examples are shown in the grayknight link.

Wow! If so, the repair job is outstanding! Laughing
Kubinka' Ferdinand looks too nice to be the vehicle on the photos.

but in some of the pics it has road wheels and in some pics they're missing

Maybe a end of the War repair job?

Vise versa.
First, it was in relatively good condition... But Russians take it to the firing range. So it became little more damaged (some additional holes appeared, some changes:) to the construction of the suspension also were made). After that it was pulled to the exhibition. During this process it was continued to be damaged - pulling is not good for damaged vehicles.
After that it was moved several times at the exhibition - the exhibition was significantly increased from 1943 to 1945 :).
During this processes it was continued to suffer damages - first, the 6th road wheel had flyed out, than the track link were broken and the 3rd wheel was lost.
In 1948, this Ferd was turned into the metal for Russia.

In Kubinka preserved Ferdinand Fahrgestell Nr. 150072 from s. Pz. Jäg. Abt. 654, deck number 501. This vehicle never was on the trophy exposition.
