Looking for russian to english translations
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The volunteers in Overloon are trying to get their ZSU-23-4 back in running order. Unfortunately they have no english manual and they are trying to understand the meaning of the controls on the left side of the driver's seat. They kindly asked for help to Michel and Walter. Here is a picture of the panel:

Maybe the people of the following links have first hand experience to start these thing.

www.militaertechnik-der-nva.de/

www.nva-forum.de/nva-b...owforum=84

Long time ago, Holland Signaal had a ZSU-23/4 and several years ago there was one at the ''Domeinen'' in Soesterberg. Maybe the Overloon museum can contact these?

For these they can use the virtual keyboard of Google Translate. They just need to select Russian to English, click the small keyboard icon and type away. I use this method a lot, and it works for small texts, single words or phrases. Anything more would be too tiring.
For example, by typing "насос топлива", I got "FUEL PUMP". "вкл" means "ON" and "откл" means "OFF"... and so on.

Massimo, did not tell all questions.

The volunteers from the museum managed to get some parts of the Shilka operational using the NVA T-55 located beside it
By comparing the lay-out of certain instruments, they managed to do so.

However the Shilka is a little different in some respects.
For example there is some sort of heating system at the rear of the vehicle and the volunteers are afraid to start it.
They don't want to take the risk of burning part of the vehicle system or put the vehicle on fire.

They would prefer to have a piece of paper (manual or so) with instructions how operate the vehicle.

Concerning contacting other "owners", this is something they all ready tried.
Either they did not get a response, or the response was "we don't know either"

I don't know if they contacted Holland Signaal, or the domeinen location.

Michel

If they want to work with the russian technics, they should learn Russian and read the original manuals.

How do they want to restore the vehicle if they can't translate simple words on the control panel? Do they think these words are the single information required to work with complicated vehicle...

Learn Russian, to repair a tank is unnecessary.

Easier to find a local professional translator. And, if a native Russian - the better!

some nice ideas, however this also gives some problems

- concerning the point of learning Russian, the staff runs for about 75% with volunteers and I don't think they will be keen to learn Russian just for fun;

- even if there would be a person that was willing to learn Russian, the ZSU is the only Russian vehicle they have and can't get it running. The East-German T55 is running, the T34's, the trucks, about all other Russian origin hardware;

- concerning the Russian translator, this only partly solves the problem. Knowing what the label of a certain gauge or knob is, doesn't mean you will be able to get it running. You will need to get a complete manual and get it translated ...

However I have another possible sollution, the former East-German army used ZSU 23-4 also.
Perhaps it's possible to find a German copy of such a manual.

Michel

Dear Frinds,
I have the ZSU-23-4 two manuals of 1969 in Polish:

23mm Poczworna samobiezna armata przeciwlotnicza ZSU-23-4 - Album risunkow (Four-fold self-propelled 23mm anti-gun ZSU-23-4 - Album of drawings), 151 pages, format DJV, size ~ 7.5 MB.

23 mm armata Poczworna samobiezna przeciwlotnicza ZSU-23-4 - Opis techniczny (Four-fold self-propelled 23mm anti-gun ZSU-23-4 - Technical description), 212 pages, format DJV, size ~12 MB.

Tell whether you are interested.

Yours faithfully, Jiri

P. S.
Now it is in Holland a lot of technically educated Poles.

The heating system at the rear of the vehicle sounds like a smoke generator to me.

I learned how to read german gothika. Not for fun, but for need...
Why these volunteers will not learn how to read good scans of russian manuals?

The East-German T55 is running, the T34's, the trucks, about all other Russian origin hardware;

If they will not be mainteined properly, they will be broken.
So they also need to read manuals for repairing these vehicles.

I don't know and I can't give you an awnser to this

Most vehicles came from the former East-German army.
So there are manuals in German available.

Like I told before, I contacted a German website about the former East-German NVA.

The most people of this website, turned out to be former NVA troops and they tried to help the best they could.

According their information there are allmost no German manuals about the ZSU available.
And the ones that are available are hard to obtain.
After the the disbanding of the the NVA all manuals where still classified as being top-secret (remember this was 20 years ago) and as such where well guarded.

They adviced me to contact the military museum at Dresden, there is a chance that they have some manuals in their archives.

Michel
