News from Ft Knox
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

good points Don. I think that many posts should look as this as a example that they should emulate.

BTW: My years of wreaking tanks ended in 2006, when I retired.

All my restoration work is a pennance for the years of tank wreaking...LOL!!

Don,
I'm curious how you were able to work out this range survey trip with the range control folks. Are these ranges that are in less use since the BRAC move? Or unrelated?

Yes Don...tell us the nitty-gritty, Inquiring minds want to know! And we want names! Laughing

Just kidding (Neil)....to be fair, I suspect less activity and unused ranges have a lot to do with it (but I also look forward to the "official" version). Times change, too, when I visited some years ago, wandering downrange was out of question, which is funny now, because "back in the day", wandering (and indeed officially sanctioned activities and duties, like test projects) up and down ranges on foot and in vehicles was No Big Deal (ordnance concerns, etc. were ignored). The PSS-2 searchlight project specifically involved troops and vehicles (jeeps, truck and tanks) traipsing up the middle of range grounds at night trying to establish detection limits of the searchlight. I guess OSHA or somebody would be all over that s**t now. It's all fun until somebody gets blowed up*. Wink

*which never happened, in my 2+ years at Planet Knox.

Neil

There has been some significant personnel turn over. The people we contacted were mutually interested in Ft Knox History and it got better from there.

As for the 'searches' they are escorted and with appropriate safety briefings and understandings.

We haven't gone into any impact areas, just downrange areas. There are some places on Ft Knox we won't be able to go, too many big or little things go boom,....

Regards
Don

Yeah, I was just wondering how it was done - naturally wondering if something similar could be feasible at APG...

I don't know if it is the same with APG as Fort Knox, but there are numerous cemetaries on post left over from the communities and churches that were displaced as the post expanded over the years. I happened to meet the post "historian" who oversees the cemetaries at a CG event at the museum who was very interested in our proposal. From that contact it progressed on to others also interested and now to our current situation. You may want to see if APG has a post historian who would be interested in seeing what is out there.

Good luck.
Garry

Just for the record, OSHA does not have jurisdiction over active duty personnel. Civilian employees, yes, but not the troops.

As has been posted already in this forum, the Patton Museum had its official grand opening/rededication on June 14. Armor for the Ages has been updated to show this event and updates to the Patton Museum Photo Tour section as well as some news bits from NACM at Fort Benning.

Chris Kolakowski, director of the Patton Museum of Leadership, has announced that he will accept an offer by the city of Norfolk, Virginia, to become the next director of the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial. His last day at the museum will be August 30 and he will start his new position on September 16.

Garry,

I've heard of someone who has an M26 Pershing hull and who's looking for a turret. I know that there is one on a range in Fort Knox. Do you think that there is a possibility for a private collector to acquire it?

thanks
