M46 AVLB Photos from LIFE Magazine
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Tumbleweed!

How very odd. The first time I every seen a AVLB or photos of them over time, the M48 was the first hull it was mounted on.

This makes it look like the launching system and the bridge was developed prior to the M48.

Interesting!

I wonder if this was just a prototype?

The photo appeared in the January 4, 1954 issue of life. Doesn't say much except it was developed for engineers and cost $250,000. Here's the link (if it'll work):

Hi all -

Per Hunnicutt's PATTON, on p304 it says the scissors bridge AVLB on M46 Patton chassis was begun in 1949, but the photos are dated 7 December 1953. More importantly, the registration number is 30127404, an M26 number, therefore the chassis may have been the M26E2 prototype, not one of the 3016-series M46s. In any case, by this date the M48 was in production, so it was decided to mount the scissors bridge on it; by the time they completed testing in 1957, the production hull was M48A2, so that became the first AVLB fielded.
