The reason I am asking this is because I remember in the mid 80's, while serving at Fort Polk, I was told two interesting bits of information.

1. The 5th Infantry Division (Mech) was the "heaviest" infantry division in the Army at that time. I was in 3/70 AR, then 1/156 AR. I remember 1/152 AR from Alabama was attached to the division (They had M60 slicks and never saw them leave the North Fort motor pool. They always used the 1/156's tanks, M60A1's). How can I find out what other armor battalions where part of the 5th at this time, and if it was truly heavy mech?

2. The 49th AD (Lone Star) of the Texas National Guard was supposedly the largest armored division in the world at this time. Once again, how can I verify this?

Thanks Costas. I am looking into divisional histories and will post what I find. Just thought that these were pretty bold statements being made.

I recommend Timothy Aumiller's "United States Army Infantry,Armor/Cavalry, Artillery Battalions 1957-2011"

You'll be able to see the makeup of the 5th Mech and 49th Armored for any date with a little bit of page turning.
