The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. Oh yeah! That's what I'm talkin' about! Thanks.

P.S.: Aside from the camo and the (again) different armored enclosure, this one has the same periscopic sight as the M109 series. Cool! Twisted Evil

And since we are on the subject of the M110 here, you may like these photos of an M110 chassis with Chinese 203mm (8 inch) ordnance.

Yes, same periscope as M109 series. Thanks for share of China M110 8", did they copy M110A2 or was BMY looking at selling them to China? Rick

My guess is that they got a chassis from somewhere (Pakistan?) and used it as a testbed/demonstrator.
They also have it on offer on a towed carriage:

I'm curious if it is mainland or Taiwanese? I think Taiwan had M-109 (175mm) guns didn't they?

Mainland (PRC) China used mostly Russian copies of nearly all weapons (tanks, spg's, etc). Taiwan had 60 M110A2 8" SPG bought from BMY. So Costas, the China M110A2 looks like a Taiwan model.
Which would be China, but Island verses mainland. Bob, the M107 175mm is what you mean. The M109 Series was 155mm also built by BMY. Rick

I assumed Republic of China (Taiwan) myself, though some originals no doubt fell into PRC hands as well (being as there's an M107 in Hue and Warsaw, at a minimum).

IIRC, M107's (175mm) were functionally the same as an M110 (8") and either of the two could be re-tubed as the other, but I stand to be corrected on that. I encountered all three types in VN (a six-gun battery of M109's were organic to 2/11th ACR). The big guns were more commonly encountered in the highlands and border regions, where there tended to be fewer firebases (further apart) and range was at a premium (these might also be supported by 105's for "neighborhood" work).

Gents, I can tell you that the piece is a PRC (i.e. mainland China) product, IIRC by NORINCO (the usual suspect). Plus, the 203mm caliber is also used by the Russians, but the Chinese have also shown a tendency to produce weapons for export that are designed to use western designed ammunition. In this case, they fitted the tube and breech to the M110's recoil system. Therefore, especially since Vietnam was unlikely to have given any RVN captured material to the PRC (I have not seen any in Chinese museums), although they gave to the USSR and other WarPac members, I stand by my guess that the vehicle itself came from Pakistan.

If a "one of a kind" it probably was PRC. They are known copycats, particularly NORINCO. Did they ever sell it to anyone You know of? Rick

Until recently, the hottest Made In China items were tanks (Type 59/69), APCs (Type 63 mostly), towed artillery mostly copied off Russian designs and various MBRLs.
The trend seems to be extending to other armored vehicles and artillery lately, but it mostly concerns the wheeled SH series.
As far as I can tell, even they didn't adopt it as standard issue. I guess it was a private venture that failed to find any takers.

China 'acquired' four chassis from Iran - quite how they got there is unclear.
