Several different models there. only 2nd and 3rd pics are original type, the third being marked "test operation". I don't believe any long barrel versions were in service in VN, but may have been elsewhere.

Doug, Third photo page 1 is the early T196E1 155mm SPH short barrel (this was an early test model). The Second photo page 1 is the Vietnam short barrel M109 155mm SPH. There is also a M109A2 test model (missing range finder, see add-on photo) that was in the restricted area at APG. Then there's a regular M109A2 at Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. The last long barrel 155mm shown at the APG main front driving along, then firing is another experiment. For other views of these, see My flicker account: brick6757. Rick

Thx, Rick. Can you help identify the rangefinder for me?

YW Doug. You mean the missing Range Finder? I've one other view of it at APG with Munson Automotive "Ripple Track" in background. Rick

M109 rangefinder. Think I used to have photo of this from BMY. I have to dig into my files this weekend. Bottom photo shows early M109 from the TM, note early RF. Rick

Thanks, Rick...

I gather the one with the "ear" might have had one on the other side? (like a steroscopic or coincidence RF). I checked all the pics of 2/11th ACR 6 gun How Bat pics I have, and they seem to have neither type (or those with right side views have no corresponding ear), so I guess that was a later development.

Never really thought of M109's being so equipped, but that's probably a sign of "older service".

Doug, Your Welcome. The ever changing M109 155mm SPH series was hard to follow. In my box of photos I got as far as M109A3, only APG and AUSA had wood mock ups and further developments (up to the M109A6 Paladin) which in same box need to be loaded. I put around 170 plus photos in(my computer) of the early stuff, this weekend I load later photos, and will try to post a few here.
I'll also try to find some more shots of the Range finder, I think there are some in the BMY files. Rick

Having loaded all M109A3-M109A6 photos, no luck in shrinking them to the 800x800 or less, size needed to post. I also tried a zip file. My computer is not working with me! Rick

Doug,
That roof assembly is called: Ballistic Cover for Panoramic telescope. I'm going to try to post a drawing. Also, I've an old Army Historical document on the M109 in use in Vietnam, with the shorter 155mm gun, it mentions various problems with this system and how they planned to fix them in later production. If You'd want a copy, email or PM me (my email is in my profile.) Can't shrink it, and tried to send two drawings, no luck. Rick

Check your PM's, Rick. I don't know the M109 system well, we just had an excellent battery of them supporting us organically in VN with 2/11th. Didn't even know they had any sort of rangefinding system or how they'd use it except in extreme direct fire situations, which hopefully don't come up in the Real World. Our How Bat guys ranks were thin to begin with and getting smaller every day, so I don't know who to ask.
