Something to see in Colombia
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi all,

I'am going to the Bogota area in december and i don't know if there is something interesting for an AFV fan (except the military museum).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Cheers from Switzerland !

There is a Stuart or two at the Infantry School/Barracks right in Bogota. I've taken a couple of pics from the road because there was not time to "arrange" a visit. You can be sure that a visit, if granted, will involve a search of car and person because of security concerns, if they even let you in.

Have you been to Colombia before? I hope you're traveling with locals and know what to expect.

I went to Cartagena in March, we had a great time, a visit to the Spanish fortress there would be a great side trip if you can make it. The area seemed very safe and a beautiful old city.

It's worth remembering that Cartegena is a semi-resort city on the coast. Medellin and Bogota are well inland in the hills (Medellin, in particular). Both are beautiful cities, but warrant caution. I have never seen so many bomb sniffing dogs anywhere in the world* as in both cities, and every significant hotel and restaurant had it's own, well-armed, security forces (not complaining, it was a comfort).

I have traveled there on business and had a great time, but I'd advise against solitary walks or travel outside urban areas except by air (and that was the policy of my hosts, themselves medical professionals in the diagnostics business). Take the same precautions as you would in Mexico City, or certain eastern European cities that I won't mention (and in which I've personally witnessed several crimes in broad daylight). FARC may have eased up a bit, but there are still threats on the streets.

*I don't include the ME, as my travels did not include there.

Well, there you go, local knowledge is the key to survival in some places.
