in '78 I worked for a company shipping "Formula 1 Wine Tables".
They would re-finish blown formula 1 engines that had been scrapped.
Then they'd insert them into a wooden table with glass top (similar to those shown).
The centre of the glass top was missing.
Into each V8 cylinder you would insert a wine bottle (or whatever) and withdraw as required.
Each table was numbered and had the history of the engine on an engraved bronze plate.
Team; driver; which races it had taken part in; how it blew.
Bloody lovely they were.
But only F1 drivers could afford 'em.

I'd like to have seen that with the 1.5L formula engines. BRM H-16 cylinders probably wouldn't have even held a shot glass! Laughing

We used to have proper Petrol-Head engines back in the good ole days.
No pussies going around saying "You can't go that fast! Health and Safety, mate."

Kid today.... Rolling Eyes

The 1.5L era was '61-'65...they enlarged them to 3L for the '66 season because there were now street/sports cars outperforming F1, which looked bad. Picture now the 1.5 H-16 from BRM that had a bore of only 2.75" (The legendary Honda RC164 250cc six cylinder bikes has a bore of 1.6"...and is the loudest machine (plane, boat, car, nitro, alcohol, anything) I have ever heard run. "Deafening" and "piercing" does not even begin to describe it.* (a running example today will cost upward of a half million dollars, they won 10/10 races in the 250 class in 1966. Some obscure Brit named Hailwood distinguished himself on one).

I hear there may be a return to a small, 1.6 formula for the reasons you mention.

I did say the good ole days, not the Jim Clarke era.
Razz

Yep, 1.6's are back.
Imagine the sound of F1 then.
They're trying to save money and appear Green.
The sound will be like listening to a scooter after getting off a hog.
I think it may last a season until they notice the crowd numbers reducing.
There are other dumb changes coming in too.
Following F1 these days is like taking the 'Go To Jail' card out of Monopoly.

2.5L engines, normally aspirated, tire width cut in half and downforce reduced to the cars weight at 170mph, no driver aids or launch control....then let's see who's fast how interesting it becomes to watch.

Oh...and implement the 60sec. stop and go for ANY "avoidable contact" as in some GT/proto series. Rigorously. We'll see some racing, then.

No, we're trying get rid of the 'stop-and-go' type penalties.
It's getting like football, where you can get be penalised for looking at someone 'funny' these days.

That is a mistake. You need to watch some World Superbike racing, where irresponsible driving behavior seldom occurs because the price is prohibitive for anyone engaging in reckless behavior. The racing is superb, the driving is honorable, and the suspense generally unachievable in any form of closed course competition on four wheels....except those that impose harsh (read: insurmountable) penalties for over-aggressive driving. Wink

Well yes, but at F1 speeds, over-aggressive driving is penalised by serious injury or death.

How long has that been your sig?
Only just noticed.
Hope it hasn't been too long.
I'm getting like my Mum!
