Calling Sherman SN Gurus
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. Post subject: Calling Sherman SN Gurus

Hi All,

I'm working on a gallery of photos of the M4A3(76) HVSS in Carlisle, PA and was about to rename the photos for upload when I checked the AFV register entry SN for the tank. It's listed as SN 65914 but it sure looks as if the tow lug SN is 65944. Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks Gents!

Even zoomed the last two digits look like 11 to me, but I'm tired and my eyes could be playing tricks.

Paul, Might be the paint thickness there but I think the number might be 65911 too? I may get up to Carlisle in the Spring, to get a closer look at the tow lug. Rick

That would be great, Rick! Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that the final digit is a 4 - it's the digit before that I question. It has the same length diagonal slash as the 4 and the slash on the 1's I've seen on tow lugs are usually shorter.

Looks like 65914 to me, but it could be 65944 as well

FWIW, it looks like two "4's" to me as well.

It's 65944. I've checked it out myself and just looked at my photos. US stamps don't have the long stroke on the 1 like the Europeans do. Also, the differential housing is marked S65944 and is much clearer.

this tank was built by Fisher as an M4A3(75) HVSS. It was upgraded in the 1950s to M4A3(76).
