The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: Google Earth

Hello folks, I'm finding many tanks, 37mm AT, 57mm AT, 3in AT, and 3in Navy guns by using Google Earth. I put: "Vfw or American Legion near (state name)" in Google Earth search. Once found try to do a "street view" for a better view.

If anyone here is listing these there are lots to found this way. Must be 100's of 57mm and 3 inch AT guns out there.

Example: (try this search as there are MANY to be found in PA)
In Google Search: Vfw near Pennsylvania

Anyone using this method? Ohio legions seem to have tons of artillery, some as many as 3 pieces, plus tanks.

AJ2, I find more items using Google Earth and Streetview, than by memory. Also, check out APG, Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA, etc. for Google views from above, unfortunately, no street views. Plus check date on bottom of page, it could be a few years old. Good example, APG museum grounds still show vehicles, which are now in Anniston, AL. But around the base and Phillips Airfield are other items, some on display. Rick

AJ2, I have used it a little (about 10 hours on the computer), mainly to confirm or zero in on existing leads, but have also found a number of things using a search as you describe. Streetview is an essential element of the process; otherwise you do as I did and find that what looks like an M5 tank from a satellite is actually a large dumpster . . .

Hopefully you are keeping track of these Smile

I get a screen like this, 10 items to the left, A-J, just click on one address at a time and Google Earth drops down to the Legion Post, then I can do the street view (little orange guy upper right of screen) if I see anything. After about 4 pages at the left I usually have to restart GE and start at page 5. I get as many as 160 per state this way. A winter time killer....................... This is by searching for "American Legion or VFW near (state name)"
