What needs documenting in the USA?
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: What needs documenting in the USA?

Hi All,

On our upcoming travels for work, L and I are planning on visiting the Wright Museum in New Hampshire and grabbing some AFVs in Maine. Future plans involve getting out to Montana and Wyoming to document what we can there as well. Eventually, I'd like to have at least one AFV location for all 50 states, but that may be my OCD talking. LOL!

Following the upcoming bit of work, are likely settling down after many years on the road, so AFV spotting will become more strategic and less frequent - certainly compared to the opportunities presented by so much traveling.

So, for future planning purposes, what does the AFV community need documented in the USA? Let us know specifics of what and where.

Thanks,
The VBs

When you are at the Wright Museum, tell them what your are doing and see if they will let you into the reserve collection.

Hi Rick,

The CF Museum is still hung up with legal wrangling and many of the ex-MVTF vehicles are still in CA. I'll check about gaining access to the existing facility - Thanks for the reminder!

Silvio - great idea, thanks - I'll see what I can do. Only wrinkle is I'll be in the area before their season opens. Fingers crossed for access.

Also just wanted to say thanks for documenting most if not all of the AFVs on display in the US, it has proven to be a fantastic resource.

Massimo - you are SO right!!!

Regards trying to get into the Wright Museum ahead of the season - no luck. Called today and they said no. Alas, that stop was the pivot for the entire day of tank hunting so we'll see what happens.

I am sure if you ever travel to Europe you can count on a excellent network of supporting people scattered across multiple locations.

Hint: ALL of my best visits to places I might, or might not have, gained access to (in U.S. and overseas) were pre-arranged by local contacts who had or obtained permission in advance of my visit. In one country, it took three attempts and was only successful with contact at the highest level (the installation commander) where it was an active military base that just happened to also have a historical collection.

Junior contacts, like gate guards and press officers generally find it safer to just say "No" than to risk reprimand by overstepping their authority. Quite a few of my visits were made easier by members of this forum. Wink

well, if you stay 4 days here, we would probably have the time to see all the tanks displayed in Normandy and Saumur Tank Museum. But you could also stay longer Wink
