Always cool to see that video. Smile
Steve Hinton Sr. is the one flying the Fw-190. If you watch the takeoff closely you can see he is wearing a GoPro camera on his head. Wish I could find that video online.

Edit:
Ironically this is post number 801 for me. Cool

That first startup is Ssssssmmmmmmmmokeyyyy! Wonder if that was the first start after a fresh engine rebuild, with lots of assembly lube and such to burn off? The startups after that were much cleaner, but still with just enough smoke to let you know it's a radial.

Love the way that engine just thumps along on the flybys.

"Pocketa, pocketa, pocketa"

I'm surprised at how many people are willing to stand in the arc of a spinning propeller, at any speed. Shocked

Yep I was thinking the same thing. I was always warned not to do that, even around R/C aircraft...they're much smaller but spin around 10K RPM.

But seeing that guy stand in line with the prop I thought, "Well he's a professional....surely he knows what he's doing"... Mr. Green

Nope, all radials smoke like that if they have been sitting for awhile. Half the cylinders are below the oil and it drains into the cylinders. That is why you always see them pulling the engines through in the old films. It pushes most of the oil out of the cylinders before they start the engines. Then the oil that is left burns off and produces the smoke that you are seeing.

Thanks Wheels.... I knew some oil and resulting smoke was normal but not that much. But then again my lack of experience around the things means I was using my lawnmower's first startup in the spring as a baseline. Smile
