German WW2 tank naming
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: German WW2 tank naming

I should probably know the answer to this but who gave the WW2 Panther and Tiger tanks those names, the Allies or the Germans themselves? And why weren't the earlier Pz Mk 1-4 given names too?

SP arty seemed to get an animal/insect name but assault guns didn't. Why? And did the German tank crews refer to their tanks by name or designation, i.e. Panther or Mk V?

Years ago on the old Heavy Metal armor site, this question was asked. I do not recall the official answer, but it became a contest to name the Pz Mk. I-IV. All I can remember is the PzKw MkI was named the "Fluffy Bunny".

I know this doesn't help. I would like to see the official answer too!

The Germans themselves used the names Panther and Tiger.
There were crew instruction manuals for the German tanks of World War II, the Panzer VI Tiger heavy tank and the Panzer V Panther medium tank, Tigerfibel and Pantherfibel.

Wim.
