Post subject: Been a while, but here's the new build.

Replacing my last build around the end of 2010. All together and working...Except issues with FSX which hopefully I can get figured out.

Case Corsair Carbide 500R White.
PSU Corsair RM1000x
MB Asus X99 Deluxe II LGA2011
CPU i7-6800k 3.4GHZ 6 core
memory Corsair Vengence LPX DDR4 2666mhz 4x8GB Quad CH
HD Samsung SSD 850 Pro 256GB
GPU Asus Strix Geforce GTX1070 Gaming 8GB
Cooling Corsair H100i v2 liquid cooling.

My first go with liquid cooling and so far extremely happy with it. Build went well with no issues...hardware wise, don't get me started on the OS (Win10).
It seems fine and stable and with my hardware opens within approx 10 seconds of pushing the power button but as usual M$ feels the need to rearrange and hide everything we've grown accustomed too. I'm sure once I find my way around it i'll be less "Old and Grumpy" about it.

Issue with getting Quicken installed, found the fix online-done. FSX Acceleration cant be validated so every time I start it I get a validation error but it still starts. After 1-15 minutes of flying it crashes and windows tells me it's time to close it. Have tried suggestions I've found online with no resolution so time will tell.

Have also installed ROF which I haven't flown for a while so we'll see how that goes plus getting my TrackIR installed.

Will update with some pics.

Sounds great Fr8ycat.

Don't get yer hopes up too much on Win10.
Usually they have alternately good/bad OS's.
Win7,8, and 10 have all been utter crap.
I'm having no end of problems with it on my PC.
Boots in 15 seconds and then BSoD's and reboots for 30.
I think it's either the RAM or a sound driver but can't track it down.
Works fine on my laptop.
Bloody thing.

Sorry to hear about your BSOD Shades. From my personal experience BSOD was always related to OC'ing but can't say that's your issue. So far Win10 has done me no harm. The Quicken issue was just that...a Quicken issue and the FSX issue has been resolved. Guess FSX doesn't like a new dll offered in Win10 so downloaded an older version and installed it in the FSX folder, problem solved.

Have used the auto OC function in the Bios to get 4.0 (20%) out of my 3.4 CPU with no problems so far. Have the GPU OC'd at 110% with the NVidia software also with no problems.

Forgot to mention I also got an LG 34" ultrawide monitor. Was a bit awkward at first but after looking online at FSX tweaks discovered there is a "Widescream" function in FSX.cfg that is turned off by default. Once turned on, WOW what a difference.

The kicker between the new and old system is flying in heavy ORBX scenery, KTVL. on the old system I was getting Mid teens to low 20's with some major lag and stutters. The new system is low 30's to low 40's with absolutely no lag. Old system was around 40c at idle and 55c under FS, new system is 28c at idle and 42c under FS. Of course we are in Winter so we'll have to see what the temps are in summer but right now i'm not disappointed with it.

Nice build dude!

Multiple cores and a healthy graphics card do the trick with FSX no matter what people say about it being CPU-bound only. Other than the Widescreen=1 fix there are other tweaks and improvements but they can present a labyrinth of testing and tuning options that take away the fun of flying. You might consider buying the Steam version of FSX - it's cheap, often on sale, and has updated code with most of the good and right tweaks (like Widescreen and HiMem) built right in. I've been using it for quite a while now and every add-on I have, which is a lot now including tons of ORBX scenery, works with it with the exception of FS-Recorder (real shame) since FSR intentionally ignores some rules about FSX addons in order to do what it does (or did). At the end of the day it's still a 32-bit app so eventually you will find the limit of how far you can tweak it until you get it to hang again, but with the Steam version I found I can definitely take it farther.

Also went liquid cooling and it has been wonderful - temps are stable, so the system is stable, and QUIET, no more fan noise. And 50,000 hour MTBF means the cooling system will outlast the useful life of the system. Win-win man.

Since my reinstall on the new system, Windows 10 has been rock solid. I wasn't as happy with it upgraded on my old system but like you say I believe a lot of that to be due to my own resistance to change. After changing a few options in some of the websites that discuss getting started with Windows 10, I find it much less "nosy" and impersonal now after making those changes (like turning off Cortana), and haven't had any compatibility issues whatsoever. Performance is great and flight sims run like a dream, so....

Will have to run over to KTVL and rent another one of your company's helo's soon. Been flying X-Plane 10 as well which can be a real hoot *once you get the thing configured right* ... and also has a plugin for FS Economy support Wink

Hey Stoopy!

Been hearing about Steam for a while but never checked into it and until your input, wasn't sure what it was other than a version of FSX. Been so long since having to reinstall FSX I was lost. Kept trying to install Acceleration first and couldn't figure out why it wasn't working Laughing Also never wrote down or printed the tweaks so had to look them up again. Currently I have the widescreen, Himem, bufferpools & radius tweaks. Saw the affinitymask tweak but seemed a bit confusing and haven't tried it.
It's running much better with the new system and plan on getting more ORBX scenery like SoCal, Pacific NorthWest & Alaska.

Hear ya on how quiet it is with liquid cooling. My last build had 7 fans total and at this point half of those are making bearing noise til they warm up.

Have recently thought about checking out X-Plane. If it happens I'm sure you'll be hearing from me with plenty of questions. Laughing

Your always welcome at KTVL my friend. At last look the 500 was at Markleeville, a short 14Mi hop. Use a heading of 300 to shoot the gorge to Tahoe.
