M103 Credit Island
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

I took a little trip to the mighty Mississippi to visit the M103 on Credit Island. This might be a T43 since it has the early small drivers hatch and early periscope arrangement seen on the T48/M48.

Thanks for posting these pictures,

I've seen pictures of this tank before. This is the first time I've seen the travel lock supports. Always assumed she had the early 2 point travel lock instead of the 3 point.

I think she is one of the T43E1's that was never upgraded to M103. Being a small drivers hatch model and not having the rotating mount for the M24 Night Viewer. Army converted 74 of their 80 T43E1's to M103 standard. Part of that change was the installation of the M24 Night Viewer. The Pilots and two production T43E1's that were used for testing were not. I do not believe she is a Pilot.

Small world-I was there about two weeks ago myself.
Any idea on when it was brought there?

From the internet the story goes that it was brought to the island in the 60’s. I’m sure the town of Davenport has a historical Society that probably has more information (and maybe photos)

I did see that and after seeing how far the tracks have sunk in the ground, I guess that it’s been there many decades.

Plus there has been several floods of the Island. The Island and the area looked like it recently flooded and there was dried mud and debris on the lower hull. All the torsion bars are obviously shot as well which makes it much easier to climb on.

The surviving registration was (in 2015) 30170208, which would make it the T58/T43E1 155mm tank seen on page 158 of Hunnicutt. The turret is GSC SER 21.

I didn't get to go over it as much as I would've liked as there was a group of about eight south/central American men milling about me, showing far more interest in my camera than I was comfortable with, so I skedaddled.

The park did have a seedy element to it. When I went it was freezing cold so that seemed to keep the nefarious elements to a minimum!
