OT: Trivia Challange to 'wingie-thingie' history buffs
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Okay, this goes out to our hosts or anyone else that might be motivated. Shocked

Can anyone guess the historical significance to the bottom flag?

Hint: Historical figure Cool

Armor content: I attended 'several years'... ...dropped out to enlist as a tanker....

Appearently very obscure, but there is a neat personal story along with it.

It has to do with a certain type of uniquely marked airplane......

Next time I better read the whole post. Didn't catch the part about an airplane. Only thing I can think of was they found a P-40 in a basement used by cadets training during WWII. It is now located at the USS KIDD Museum.

BINGO....

Also the bonus is that the plane was an original 'Flying Tiger' P40 that was 'donated' because Gen Clair Chenault was Louisiana raised.

I was told that the 'Flying Tigers' were so named by Chenault in respect to the Civil War 'Fightin' Tigers' a Brigade of Confederates from Louisiana. (I'm not sure if the name origin is factual)

As an typical LSU Freshman (1978-79), living in on of the dorms in Tiger Statium, I went exploring in the many 'catacombs' and steam tunnels under the Stadium. In a store room, THAT P40 WarHawk was stored. Long forgotten.

Years later, the plane was donated by LSU to the Louisiana Veterans Memorial in Baton Rouge, where it hangs today.

That is correct about the name "Fighting Tigers" coming about because of the reputation the Louisiana soldiers obtained while fighitng for the Confedracy.

That Louisiana Veterans Memorial is part of a complex attached to the KIDD museum. You can see this when crossing the Mississippi River on I-10. Been awhile since I have been there but i believe there are other "wingy-thingies" there! Wink

I wish I had a camera when I first saw it. There was an old photo, that I had seen, when the plane was being put into the storage room, many years prior.

My father, who attended (& graduated!) LSU back in the early 50's had relayed the rumor of the Airplanes 'forgotten' storage lore, to me before I attended LSU.

Here is a photo from the Uss Kidd website:
