Equipment ID & Wingy-Thing Question
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi TW! Hi Folks!

I think your right about the item at the far end being a Sheridan. The other vehicle, and thing in the middle, is Hummer packed full of extra items. Notice the bumper markings on it. I think there is only two major items there, not three.

Looks like to me, both items are rigged for air drop.

As for Aircarft, I have been on a C-141 with a Sheridan and a M114 Lingle. That AC is not tall enough to be a Starlifter. My guess is a C-17 Globemaster III. Doesn't look wide enough to be a C-5.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out!

Here is an interior shot of a C-17 with a smaller "load". Looks like the plane in question.

Hi TW! Hi Folks!

Hey Mark! If you should run acrossed a photo of a C-17 loaded up with two Abrams main battle tanks, please let me know. I have a couple of guys at the local model club who are claiming it can be done.

I have look around and have failed to come with any.
I for one just don't belive it yet.

All scouts out and report back!

Is it me,....or does that look like an M8 AGS!!

Definitely a hummvee (near) But the far (covered) Turret and hull size....Screams M8 to me.

Not sure, but my 1st impression

Hi Don!

M8 AGS? That was what I was thinking at first. Then I noticed the 3/73 bumper markings on the humvee. Take a hard look at the edges of the hull. You will see the covers for the swim screen. It maybe that the tail light on the Sheridan are covered up and that is why that area doesn't look right.

My 2 cents,
Sgt, Scouts Out! Smile

Hi TW! Hi Folks!

I agree, by about 54 tons over when looking at a pair of M1A2SEPs.

Rear contour seems wrong for M551, and turret is unique also....

Here is my 'evidence' for my suggestion....

M8 Hull (rear view):

M8 turret (frontal view):

I think it looks REAL close....

Hi Don! Hi Folks!

I agree it don't look right for a M551, but I think that is due to all the protective coverings so the vehicle can be airdroped.

Try this. look at the end of the gun barrel.
One, it is shorter that the rear hull. That = Sheridan, not M8 AGS.
Two, look at the size of it, it is a large as the airman's head standing next to vehicle. With a 6 inch bore and another 1 or so for thickness of the barrel with some tape, it is almost the same size as that airman's head. That's way to big to be a 105 barrel. This = Sheridan.

I am sure that those dark (almost black) things running up the side of the hull are the rubber boots that cover up the folded swim screen.

If that was a test drop of a M8 AGS, why is a vehicle from the 1/73 Armor also in the aircraft?

I agree it does not look like a Sheridan. But I think it is.

Hi TW!

Check out the size of that gun tube and the go back an look at the first photo. It's the same gun tube.

Now that's a C-141 or a C-130. The one time I was in a C-141 with a Sheridan, we had to climb over the Sheridan it to get passed the wing box area of the aircraft.

Good find Tumble!

Roy

I yield to your superior eye. I was squinting too much at the monitor.

As for the C 17 w/two M1A1's.....never loaded a C 17 so I can't comment.

I have loaded two tanks in a C 5, for training. Aircraft didn't move though.

I did load up a tank and a Bradley once, and the plane even took off. They didn't go anywhere, though. They just circled a couple of times and returned.
