Armor in cinema: "The Day the Earth Stood Still"...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hint: Both types of vehicles appear to be one roadwheel short. Wink

(Not to mention the obscene armor overhang on that "Bradley")

Thank you kindly. It seems i have much to learn. At least i have found the right place to do so.

Say, Jeff....
At >1,500 pixels wide, those lovely Hooter's girls need two monitors just to view...and makes for a mess o' scrolling sideways to read the thread. Could you provide a smaller image or delete that one for us ((800 pixels makes a good maximum...700 is better yet).

And what a shameless unit plug that was! I have a hard time picturing real tanks running around with markings like that on the glacis except for parade duty.

Hi Doug! Hi Folks!

Those are not real tanks, those are Washington D.C. dog and pony show vehicles and that is why I think the 3rd ACR did paint their unit patch on the front hulls of the tanks.

On a related topic, during my search for images of tanks from The Day The Earth Stood Still (it's official, i have no life), i ran across this website:

www.armytrucks.com/

Of most interest is their list of vehicles for rent:

www.armytrucks.com/page1.html

The tanks at the top of Page 1 really caught my attention. To my civilian eyes these look real. But there are many here who really do know about these things.....so i figured i'd better ask the Learned Elders. So are these really M1s? And is that really a Bradley Fighting Vehicle? I didn't think you could go out and *rent* things like that.

Hi Jinx! Hi Folks!

I have to agree the Abrams are Cents and the Bradley is a M113. Now did anyone notice something very wrong with the layout of the Bradley hull?

Turret layout looks about right. Is missing the co-ax machine gun and that arm that holds the gun sight. Other than that it looks OK. Everything is about where it should be which tells me the photo is not posted backwards.

As for the hull, check out the driver's location. It is on the wrong side of the vehicle!

Reverse image perhaps? What carrier has a right side driver compartment?

If it was a reverse image, would not the turret also be reversed?

Speaking of the turret, after taking a closer look at photos of *real* Bradleys, i can see that the barrel of the main armament looks a lot different on the rental machine. And the tracks, road wheels and drive sprocket on this machine do look like those of the M113.

As for right-hand-drive, the FV-432 shown lower on the page is an RHD vehicle. But i'm pretty sure this wasn't an FV-432 in an earlier life.

Jeff could always post a link that would let us view his "find", and not cause all that unwieldy scrolling around that was noted in the Com-Central suggestion box. Wink

Guys,

Those "M1's" are not Centurions but are in fact Ex-British Army Chieftans.
Notice the track and central drivers position, also the drive sprocket.

Agree that the "Bradley" is/was an M113.

BTW, have driven Cheiftan Mk5 and 10, plus Centurion and FV432's and Fv434's (engineers version).

Hi David! Hi Folks!

Great spot David!

Last time I had a close look at that company's equipment, they were using Centurions as M1s. As for the central drivers position, I didn't even think about that. Just figured they had cut the hull so they could put the driver in the middle. There is one more item that crys out 'Chieftain'. The rised ridge that curvies around the driver's hatch area. I guess it is something like a bullet splash guard?

One set of ciber spurs to David for outstanding recon work!

Roy,

Why thank you!

The splash guard is just that, its there for wading so that the driver doesn't get a Tsunami!

Woo Hoo! That's the coolest thing I ever saw, Jinx. A fake Abrams on an old Chieftain chassis. The conversion doesn't look half-bad. Good enough for any number of Hollywood epics, anyway. That Bradly might be a scaled down fiberglass hull on a M113 "Gavin" chassis. Looks like someone's tooling-up ahead of time for those inevitable Iraq conflict movies.

D'oh!
Darned new board. I thought I was the first to answer the question about the fake Abrams's but I forgot the threads go to extra pages nowadays. There were twelve new posts on page 2 that I didn't see! Still getting used to this board format.

Well, "Goldfinger" was on the other nite as well....and for the first time I realized that those aren't all M113's in there with the very purty M48's, but M59's as well. (In fact, most of the APC's are M59's, with only 1-2 M113's visible).
Always a hoot to see Ft. Knox more-or-less as I remember it (still with acres of WWII-era wooden barracks).
All the troops with rifles were carrying M-14s.

Doug

On the subject of Goldfinger,....

I found a webpage written on the history of the LST building.
Heres a quote I found about the LST building & Goldfinger:

When one thinks of unique structures, thoughts turn to Egypt's pyramids, France's Eiffel tower, and Ft Knox's Gold Vault. But few know of the existence of the LST (Landing Ship Tank) building on Eisenhower Avenue, Ft Knox. In the fantasy world of Hollywood, the LST building is located just down the street from the Gold Vault as it appears in the James Bond film, Goldfinger. Just as Goldfinger's motorcade turns off Eisenhower Avenue into the driveway of the Gold Vault the LST building is shown on the left with its front sloping much like the bow of a ship. The truth of the matter is, the LST building and the Gold Vault are on opposite sides of the military installation.

Ft Knox Ark

Quite an interesting read...

Those 2-color camouflaged Abrams tanks were the ones used in the movie, "The Hulk". They were in the scene when Big Green escaped the underground center and was bounding towards San Fransisco.

Best part of the whole movie.
