I want an allied steam locomotive, so gimme one!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Post subject: I want an allied steam locomotive, so gimme one!

Hi Guys-
Am I the only one who would like to see an allied WW-II steam locomotive? Right now, Baluard makes a Series VIc Type 75 German locomotive and a BR 60 armoured locomotive. Trumpeter is giving us a BR52. So, we have three German steam locomotives and a Diesel locomotive WR 360 C14, that last is also from Baluard. Neither of the above two kit manufacturers are in north America which, may have something to do with why we have not seen an allied locomotive yet. I raised this subject once before and was told that no kit manufacturer saw any diorama possibilities involving allied locomotives. Well, the U.S. sent steam locomotives to Europe during WW-I most of which were still in use during WW-II. Both the U.S. and Britain manufactured steam locomotives specificaly for use in Europe post D-Day. So, there is a considerable amount of diorama possibilities for allied steam locomotives. With Dragon having already released a number of Reichsban rolling stock with no plans to release any allied rolling stock, this whole idea is already starting from a position way behind the eight ball. I mean Dragon has supplied rolling stock that can be added to all the locos. mentioned above while there is nothing available to be added to an allied loco. On the other hand, some of the Dragon rolling stock could be used behind the U.S. WW-I era locos.
As for the British and U.S.WW-II locos. said rolling stock would have been pressed into allied service as it was captured during the run across N.W. Europe. Well, what do you guys think? Would an allied steam Locomotive have any buyers?
Thanks for listening-

Geoff,
Nothing for you to build here, and the scale might not suit you, but check out all the items in Banshee's post:

I build 1/72 rather than 1/35 scale armor, but I have been wanting to build a Soviet armored train for quite some time now. Would love to be able to find suitable rolling stock and locomotive at an affordable price. Marklin's 1/87 stuff does not fit my definition of affordable, either.

Go for 1/25th card David - price is reasonable. I am currently building a 1/25th scale polish armoured train... all 4-metres of it!

www.gpm.pl

Its easy to use the card as a template for a plastic card version as well....

Hi Jim-
Where on the site is the armoured train you're building? I looked and cannot find it. Could you, please, let me know where it is? I tried what I thought was the obvious, clicking on railway, and still could not locate it. Are they also doing allied locomotives? Way to much to hope for!
Thanks-

I also did the schienepanzers as well though I went for using the card kit as a pattern and actually built them in brass sheet (I have a G64 garden railway and they are just the right size for it). They are just waiting to be painted at the moment but, as they are the first thing I ever soldered together from brass sheet I cannot quite get past the 'sitting there admiring it' stage

Gentlemen,

Think outside the box! US steam WW2 locomotives have been available for many years. Look at model railroads. They are in 1/48th and 1/87th scales primarily, but there are some in different scales, even some very pricey handbuilt models in 1/32nd.

Hi Guys-
The picture with this caption:
"some kind of mainentance vehicle ?" the front end looks like a German halftrack, about the size of a FAMO!

I think the photo may be deceiving as far as size is concerned, since that is probably a narrow gauge track it is sitting on. The vehicle appears to have been converted from a standard 6x4 cargo truck. Not near my copy of Bart Vanderveen's Directory of Military Vehicles, so I can't verify the make of it. Could be an Isuzu, Nissan, or Toyota in the 2-3 ton load range. Probably would have been used for hauling carloads of ballast stone from quarrying operations to the main rail line, shunting, and other such tasks.
