Lead, Follow, or get the H--l out of the way!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

These 2ID soldiers from C. Co. 68th Engineers, appear to be playing follow the leader with a civilian on a scooter. Man these scooters are EVERYWHERE. While I was in Korea in the spring of 2002, a small girl was crushed by an engineer AVLB that was in convoy. It hugged the right side of the road to avoid an on-coming "Terminator" (very large dump trucks and semi's the Koreans drive at insane speeds). The E-5 driving was very distraught and was even put on suicide watch. The Koreans wanted him in jail for Vehicular Homicide / Manslaughter. He was still being held in Korea past his PCS date by the time I left. I don't know the final disposition of that case, but I believe the military paid the family $40,000 in damages and issued an apology.

Jeff

I shivered when you mentioned the 'Terminator' Dump Trucks....

TCing my tank in a Company (mounted) Roadmarch up to Rodriquez Range (MPRC), we were in the right lane of a winding two lane road. A truck was passing my tank, and a car was passing the truck (on the sidewalk!!) and then as we were cresting a hill, rounding a blind curve, the 'cab-over' yellow & green lights came over the hill, around the bend. The car swirved, the truck swirved and (of coarse..) the massive Dump Truck 'blew by' us in the opposite direction.

Its bizarre that one can't feel 'safe' in a 65 ton tank, when the Terminator Dump Trucks (w/ lights their colored lights on) are around.

Thats life in the ROK!!
Thank god for SOJU to calm ones nerves in 'AH-JI-MAs' tent once we got to the range...

I couldn't stand Soju. I drank their beer once in a while, called "Hite" (only when I couldn't find sufficient quantities of American beer, and sufficient was never enough). Tasted like watered down peee, ( not that I know what peee tastes like mind you). I have never seen such brazen, foolish, ignorant driving in my life as I did in Korea. Souel is the worst traffic ever. I hated driving through towns. Kids were the worst, no fear. Did you ever venture "Warrior Base" way when up around the DMZ?

On New Years Eve 1990-91 I spent the night at Camp Bonifas in The DMZ!! The band I was in played for off duty personnel at a Camp New Years Party.

Home of the JSA, Camp Bonifas houses the personnel (US & ROK) that man the 'Truce Village'.

Camp Bonifas is North of the Imjim River over the 'Liberty Bridge' Which closed at dark. We were told that the ROK considers considers anthing north of the Imjim (beyond Liberty Bridge) as a free fire zone after dark.

Jack Daniels, SOJU, 'Oscar', and Korean Beer,.....OH MY!!! Took me several days to feel human again after that episode.

Did I mention I don't drink anymore?

When I was in the Air Force my father told me to never volunteer for Korea. His reason

'I spent enough time in that mudhole in 52-53 for several generations of our family, and I didn't leave anything over there anyone needs to go back and get'

Armor content - He used to tell stories about the Sherman that was assigned to their section of the MLR trench line and how they would walk 50 cal rounds behind a North Korean or Chinese in their trenchline until he dove into a bunker. Then they would pump a couple maingun rounds into the bunker door.

There were also the stories about riding out a Typhoon underneath a Sherman that had a truck chained to either side of it while guarding the fenceline of a large POW camp on an island (Cheji-Do??)

Camp Bonifas, I went on the tour there in 97. Went back there again in April 2002 for EIB training (Expert Infantry Badge). The group of soldiers I was gradeing had to do the 12 mile march from Bonifas, out around many twisting roads and hills, and back to Bonifas in 3 hours. They started at 0300hrs, pitch black. Finished as the sun was coming up. In 97 I went into "truce room" (it had many names), where the entire room and table have a 3 inch line running right through the middle. Actually walked over to the North side and took pictures of the North's Guards stareing in at us through the windows. We were told that the guards were to count and record names, EIB's, and Ranger Tabs they saw on soldiers that visited.
