Just found, photo of prototype AmphiGavin!
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Yes, it is none other than Gavin MacLeod in his role as Captain Merrill Stubing, from the ABC series "The Love Boat".

While portraying the skipper of the Pacific Princess, Gavin MacLeod had to perform both on land and at sea, making him fully amphibious.

Amphibious Gavin = AmphiGavin.

(Obligatory armour content: in 1967 Gavin MacLeod appeared in an episode of the ABC series "Combat", a show that frequently featured armoured vehicles.)

HA HA HA....YUP!!

Gavin MacLeod played his most challanging role as the over-worked tank crewman / mechanical genius 'Moriarty'!!!

Hence the Donald Sutherland character ( Oddball ) as the tank commander always chiming to a complaining Moriarty with "......always with the negative waves Moriarty..."

The movie was, of course,... KELLYS HEROS !!

A quote that has followed me thru 20 years in the Army,....

I just wasn't quick enough....

(In my best Don Adams voice) Would you believe..........i was having an out of body experience and, in fact, unwittingly channelling Sparky the Gavin Dog?

I seem to remember that he was part of the PT boat crew on "McHale's Navy" as well.

'A quote that has followed me thru 20 years in the Army,....'

And how many times over the years has someone asked to borrow your shoephone?

And somehow I acquired the nickname 'Max' several times through my career.

It was a surprise to my wife when she got called '99' at the school she worked at just after we were married.

Of course the one time I ever saw a TI at basic stymied for something to say was when the TI for a flight standng next to us at the Chow hall came over and started 'talking' to the recruit next to me and said 'So you think you're smart airman?' And with a straight face the Airman shouted 'No sergeant I'm Robinson, Smart is behind me' The Sergeant looks over Robinsons shoulder at my name tag stands there for a moment and stomps off as our whole flight struggled to contain our laughter.

Given the average age of the members of this forum, I shouldn't have to explain how I acquired the nickname of "Harry" in basic and kept it throughout my time in the service.

Maybe this shot of a more "militaristic" Gavin will mend a few fences?

(No, he's not in a tank.....but you know some day he *will* be.)

(And if you remember back far enough, some early tanks *did* mount Lewis Guns.....)

Boys! Boys!

The more you keep using the G-word, the more it will become ingrained in our heads. I already think 'Lingle' when I see a photo of the old M114. The last thing I need is the horrid 'G'-meme (look up 'meme', you will be surprised) to pop up like "It's a Small World After All" when I see an M113! I try to think 'Kibbey' for that one. If we say it, it will make it so. If we don't say it - it will (I hope) go away.

Speaking of "The Sand Pebbles", I was a longshoreman clerk in the mid-sixties when that film was made, and I had me some totally big fun with all the props they were shipping overseas for the filming. Loved that Lewis gun! Me old Dad peppered a Junkers 88 with one, on one of the Murmansk runs, when the 'Jerries' were doing low-level attacks on shipping and escorts. Many other ships had at it as well, and it fell into the sea. When the crew was picked up (lucky them, in that cold-ass water), one of them gave me old Dad his boot-heel with a .303 bullet lodged in it.

Russ, speaking of your Dad, I just picked up an old copy of H.T. Lenton's 8-volume set of Royal Navy and Commonwealth Warships of WW2. The volume on trawlers did indeed have a listing for HMS Sphene under antisubmarine trawlers. Unfortunately not a lot of info on her except pendant number, gross register tons, and dates built and requisitioned. If I can find a picture I may have to build a miniature of her for my 1/2400 scale Royal Navy collection.
