AFV quiz, whats this???
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Hi Jeff! Hi Folk!

That little baby would be a Soviet "Object 279" heavy tank mounting a 130 mm main gun. Built sometime around the early 1950s.:)

It was an attempt to build a 60 ton heavy tank, mounting a 130 mm cannon, while trying to keep the ground pressure down. Shocked

For all those who have been there and done that, just think of how much fun it would have been to trying to work on a thrown track up under the hull, in deep mud!

Sure am glad I never had to try doing that!

Man!, that sure didn't last long. I actually thought I had a good "quiz" topic. I even labeled the picture "haha you looked" in case someone tried to cheat, as I found out in an earlier posting. Well, here's what I had on this picture, the tank is in a museum in Kubinka, and its a 1957 Troyanov Super-Heavy tank with double treads. I guess this will be a short thread since the cat is out of the bag.

Ob.279 was intended to withstand a near-miss from a nuclear weapon, IIRC, which is why the hull is shaped like it is. The shape and low center of gravity prevented the tank from being flipped.

I was always amazed at the U.S. soldiers stareing at the nuclear blasts with tinted goggles in the 50's. It appeared they weren't far away at all.
