Dear Sergeant Lingle....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

No armor content but....

As a PF Fan myself, and a dedicated Wilde Sau pig, I must mention the "Animals" album as my own favorite. That CD occupies a permanent place in my car CD changer as a matter of fact!

JG3000:

There was an American vehicle tested, which passes your criterion of blowing up easily. Unfortunately, it was not armored, and so does not fit your definition.

If you look up on one of them "internets" for Janes' International Defense Review (spelt with an 'S' in Britain), you might come upon a tiny gnat-like weapon called the "Fire Ant". Maybe late 'eighties, very early 'nineties.

This was a remotely-operated, wheeled, anti-armor weapon that fired a self-forming warhead in the form of a copper disc that was dynamically-reshaped into a penetrator by a huge explosion behind the copper disc. I'm thinking that the malleability of copper was the reason for its selection, rather than for its hardness.

This explosively-deformed now-dart-shaped projectile was to go on and penetrate just about anything, at something like fifteen thousand feet per second. I thought at the time that, at fifteen thousand feet per second even a Kleenex could penetrate lots of things.

Funny litle bugger, it looked as though after the first (and only) shot it would catapult arse-over-tea-kettle from the recoil.

I nominate it as the token vehicle of the Gavin people.

I had not heard of the Fire Ant before. Scary!

Here is a page with two short videos showing this nasty little devil giving its life to destroy a tank.

(Don't think a "Gavin" would last very long if a Fire Ant found it.....!)

Hi Folks!

One more point I forgot to add to my first post.

NO WHERE in those four sentences to you read any support for naming any AFV after General Gavin.

Someone ask if the Pinto had ever been up armored. In fact FORD Motor Company did add some armor.

My wife owned a 1971 Pinto when I married her. During the time we had that vehicle one recall was for a thick sheet of plactic to be installed between the fuel tank and the rear axle so it could not cut into the tank. An early example of non-steel armored plate.

As a Scout, I always like the idea of more armor covering my 6 o'clock.

Sgt, Scouts Out!

...Too bad the Brits got in line first to name the C-47 the 'Dakota'...

Russ:

I thought the C47 was the "Goonie Bird"...

Hi Russ! Hi Folks!

I maybe wrong on this, but wasn't the US version of the C-47 named the Sky Train and the name Goonie Bird is a Vietnam era nick name?

Confuzed,
Sgt, Scouts Out!
