Patton Museum Panzer III Restoration update...
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

The Panzer III restoration page is still in flux. I need to add accurate and informative captions to the photos. Bear with me.

Very cool! Wasn't this Pz III captured from the 116th Pz Div in France?

Now if I could only get back to Ft. Knox in the next couple of years...

We have two Panzer III's, here. The vehicle that is being worked on was previously in the museum, for many years.

The other, was previously on a concrete pad behind the museum, but it too has been moved to the motor pool facility.

Off hand I am not sure, but I can find out.

I remember seeing the one in the museum back in '88. I have a picture or two of it somewhere in my collection.

Too bad that nice original paint/cammo job fell by the wayside. Did they repaint the interior as well ... all those nice original markings that used to be in there?

Geoff

Its my understanding that back in the 70's or 80's, a complete operational restoration was done. Both the interior and exterior would have gone the way of the paint gun.

I've been in the Panzer III and I don't remember if there are any markings. I could be mistaken though.

Digging thru some old photo CDs. I found these:

This StuH 42 was repainted (as you see it) years ago. It is currently on display in the museum following a cosmetic restoration with a more suitable color scheme.

I thought I'd throw this in for fun....AMX 13

Well, it took longer than five minutes. I finally got some information from those working on the Panzer III restoration and have captions on the photos. I'm sure most of you here already knew what the photos were showing.

One of those PzIII engine pictures in the link had an pretty unusual M3 Lee in the background. Welded hull (no rivets) with side door welded shut. You think all these unusual variants are long gone and they keep popping up in the most unexpected places! ...though I guess the Patton museum would actually be one of the MOST expected places for unusual stuff to pop up.
