Brewed up Abrams
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Today's news showed a brewed up Abrams in west Baghdad that had been hit by one of those ubiquitous roadside bombs. The vehicle was engulfed in flames and the tracks had been blown off. No word on whether the crew survived the attack.

The attack on the M1A2 took place in EAST Baghdad. Thankfully, the Army's saying the crew got away unharmed!

I'm trying to figure out where the flames are coming from. The blow-off hatches on the turret roof are intact, the engine compartment doesn't seem to be on fire. Maybe the forward fuel tank got ruptured in the blast. I was going to ask if burning tire rubber would really make that much smoke & flame, then i spotted smoke coming out of the commander's hatch as well.

The track being off the way it is is weird. The tank must have rolled forward, if the blast caused the track break.

in those photos, since there are no personnel around, I'd say the crew got clear, and this is continued burn off.

Hi Dontos! Hi Folks!

It's not weird, you get that when a tracked vehicle is moving with some speed and the driver is disoriented by the hit. He probley stomped on the brakes which held the block on the top in place while the vehicle rolled off the lower block and was dragged enough that section became inverted.

The black smoke tells me the road wheels and track block are burning, but that gray smoke coming out of the hatch tells me the heat from the outside fire is heating up something on the inside. Could be the paint starting to light up. I would think that if there was a hole in the hull, then the smoke from the inside would be just as black as the outside smoke. If some cables have started burning the smoke from the inside would also be black.

My take on that land mine strike.

Looks like that photo was taken some time after the first two. Not much fire on the outside. My guess is the heat from the outside cause a secondary fire on the inside.

It will be interesting to see an after the fire is out photo.

Notice something?

Blow out panels still attached.

Ammo is protected....it proves that the vehicle does what it is supposed to do....Crew survivability.

I guess I need to watch the news on TV (yuck!!)

According to Reuters, the New York Times, CNN.com, and several other sources, the crew escaped unharmed. No timeline given for the photos, though.
