Accessing Patton & Aberdeen
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

Whats it like getting access to Aberdeen & Patton these days - I would like to fly in go to Aberdeen, photograph everything with a coat of paint on it then work my way across to Patton via every military museum on the route.

I don't fancy sitting around for a few days trying to get clearance to visit either of the two.

Cool

Well it depends on the amount of access you want/need Smile

To get to the Museum at Aberdeen requires a stop at the main gate, provide Drivers License or other gov't issued photo ID for everyone over 18 in the car and Vehicle Registration. For most foreign visitors I believe a passport may be required. (I will check during the week when I can call the staff up there). To get access to the 'Bob Smart warehouse tour' you need to coordinate with me to make sure i will be available. If you want access to other items in the collection that are stored in other storage locations on base it would be best to contact the Mueum staff and see if they can arrange to escort you to those locations. There are storage areas 'behind the fence' that are almost impossible to get to.

But if you're just looking for stuff with a "coat of paint" on it, thats primarily the items on "tank road" / old Mile of Tanks, a few items at the museum, and a bunch inside the warehouse. Pretty much everything else needs a fresh coat of paint Sad So Bob's tour should suffice...

Actually Bob I was considering connecting your brain up to my portable computer and downloading the contents to save time... you can have it back when I'm finished with it Laughing

I highly reccomend Bob's tour Laughing , been on it twice now and will go whenever I get a chance. Bob's a real gentlemen and both times I've gone Neil B. has been there also so it's a great chance to put a name to some of the faces on the board.

If you are referring to Aberdeen MD, the museum there is well worth the visit. I spent 2 years stationed there (and grew up there to boot). Worked with the National Ground Intelligence Center. My main job in life was driving around Russian vehicles. Talk about a great job.

My brain doesn't connect well with PCs. I am strictly a Unix Dinosaur (as my son and some of my coworkers remind me) and the interface between Unix machines and those who have surrendered to 'Uncle Bill' is not always the easiest to work.

Also if you were to download the contents there would also be a lot of 'wingy thing' and 'floaty thing' trivia as well American Civil War(aka 'The Late Unpleasantness') that you would have to sort out. I put it in there and I even have trouble at times Smile

The compliment is appreciated though

I was just reading at Armor For The Age's website that the Patton Museum now has it's own gate and you may have to show a picture ID.
The Patton Museum has its own gate right off of US 31W. It leads to a fenced in parking lot with a walk through gate to the museum grounds (couple hundred feet). No ID card is required to enter the parking lot or museum. Your vehicle stays in the parking lot and if you wanted to sneak onto the main installation, you'd have some walking to do.

However, there are a number of interesting items elsewhere on post, not accessible by simply visiting the Patton Museum. Including the MBT-70 Pigg, XM803, XM800 ARSV, and the T29, T30 and T34 heavy tanks...

Not to mention the LST Building and other museum storage areas the museum staff may be able to help you with...

In general, the PAO office told me photos of historic vehicles on post were okay, but no photos of sensitive areas like the gate, buildings, troops, current vehicles, etc.

Not sure what the procedures are for visiting the "post" vice the museum now. I'd recommend contacting the PAO office: www.knox.army.mil/center/pao/pa.htm
They can even help run your request through security in advance (thats what I did when I visited in 2004).
