This One's For You, Roy.....
The AFV ASSOCIATION was formed in 1964 to support the thoughts and research of all those interested in Armored Fighting Vehicles and related topics, such as AFV drawings. The emphasis has always been on sharing information and communicating with other members of similar interests; e.g. German armor, Japanese AFVs, or whatever.

'Day one' as a volunteer and hes got the Sheridan turret squared away, and wants to get our 'Lingle' running.

Talk about motivation.....

that is cool. a real volunteer, and in the photo too. you are having a little more fun these days tumbleweed. (you just passing thru KY or staying there a while?)

hey wait a minute, there is something missing.... where are the beer?
relaxing-- sun, tracks, no beer...

what else needs to be done to the M551? and when will you tackle the "lingle". if you offer to fund the restoration on your own no one will tell you no!

I'm living and working in Kentucky but I have a history of not staying long. Hence the nickname 'Tumbleweed'. But if I move again I'm liable to be a bachelor Confused

Sherdians are/were my specialty. I just looked over the one at the museum briefly. Needs parking brake fixed. Gun is not all the way in battery. Gun seals leak. No missile reticle in telescope. Shillelagh missile subsystem inop, probably bad power supply. Problem with driver's instrument panel. All things considered it is in very good shape. I can fix just about every thing wrong with it. The initial problem was that the turret drifted excessively in STAB mode. Wasn't to hard to fix.

I am already 'politicking' for a project. At Anniston Army Depot, Alabama there is an M551A1. Not just any M551A1 but my platoon sergeant's from Budingen, Germany in 1976. Since the Museum doesn't have an A1 I've let it be known that I will go get it free of charge. Just need to borrow a truck. Hope to do this someday. One of my work buddies has told me he will go as a co-driver. The hard part will be getting my boss to let me borrow a low-boy. (FMTV W/Trailer).

It does look like a great day to enjoy a good Lingle!

With the 1st Cav moving in down here, to be replaced by the 1st AD in a few years, maybe a Lingle will show up. For now photos will have to do.

Hi, Roy!

The 1st Cav is coming? That's a new one. Any details or links to stories? They are doing some crazy stuff. Who will be at Fort Hood? Nobody?

Would sure be neat if you could make it out for Memorial Day. Along with Doug we'd have the 1st Annual AFV Convention!

The 4th 'Longknife' BCT, 1st Cav. Div. (CD) is standing up here at Ft. Bliss. They have M2A2 (A2s, not A3s) Bradleys already. Haven't seen any tanks yet. Read in the base paper that they have M-109A6s already. It is the new Unit of Action type of brigade. The Army has been building new motor pools, barracks, offices, and quarters like crazy over on Biggs Field for them. The story is that when the 1st Armored Division (AD) returns from Germany, the 1st AD BCT at Ft. Riley will be reflagged 1st Infantry Division. The 4th BCT, 1st CD, here at Bliss will be reflagged as a BCT with the 1st AD. Then the 1st AD division HQ and three UofA BCTs will be stood up to join the one already here.

At Ft. Hood, the 1st Cav will stand up a new 4th BCT to replace the one here at Ft. Bliss. At that point, the 1st Cav will have four UofA BCTs at Ft. Hood along with the 3rd ACR which will also be as a new UofA BCT.

I sure wished I could! Leave planning around here is done at the beginning of the year and I didn't ask for any time off over Memorial Day. Plus I am a bit short on annual leave as it is. My saved up leave time took a big hit last year when my mother got sick and I had to move her from Colorado to here. Sad

You all have a great time.

Well some of us are trying to make it out there for the weekend. The fact that Doug is going to be there was definitely a factor in the decision. WHen you announced that you were back in the area it made the idea even harder to ignore.

Do we need to start a 'Together again for the first time' thread to coordinate the event?

Heh, right now I'm not planning to take off any more than 4 hours for the trip, being a three-day weekend and all...

Although I guess Fort Bliss is just a little bit further from Fort Knox than WDC is... Wink

I'm genuinely flattered...
Well, I had a heckuva' shock Friday when I received a jury summons for the 25th...HOWEVER, it's County Superior Court and my company doesn't pay benefits for jury duty and I'm the principal wage earner so that's considered a valid excuse. Letter is being prepared now and I'll mail it today, so.................I'm comin'! (It's vacation...I will be paid for that).
I'm all for civic duty, but I've done the jury thing with a company that did pay while serving...so my concience is clear.

See ya' there!
